15 mins with plenty training and dedication = 14 mins.

14 mins with plenty training and dedication = 13 mins

so on and so on until you reach your peak condition.  Everyone has to start somewhere.

I've been weight training too long and neglecting my cardio I'd be very happy with 12 minutes. I'll have a bob at it tomorrow morning. (am cardio yay)

Do you have any kind of training plan to improve, or just little and often?

Remember fellas running a sub 10 min time makes you a good runner, not fit.

Speed, stamina, suppleness and strength are all elements of fitness and some people are better at some than others.

This is what I spend all day debating at uni still. Is a marathon runner fit?  Yes they can run super human distances in 2 hours but give them labour intensive job on a construction site, EG ask them to push a wheel barrow full of concrete and they will probs snap in half.

Equally, see how many pull ups a super muscled steroid abuser can do. Or how fast they can run the 1.5 mile yet they could sling the conrete filled wheel barrow over there shoulder and forget it was there.

Fit to me is being average to good at all aspects.  Being superb at one aspect but crap at all the rest is more like being a specialist only.

Just my thoughts.

I understand what your saying but 'Fit' or Fitness is based around athletic cardio ability on the whole.

A strong guy could shift concrete all day while smokings cigs and be unhealthy but not be able to run 1 mile at all.

Cardio fitness has to be compared to something and in this case running 1.5 miles in 10 minutes is something a minority, not a majority of the public can do, thus those who can do it are fitter in this area.

Your example of the concrete filled wheel barrow over the shoulders strange I must admit. While Hes got it over His shoulder the Marathon runners would be pushing theirs across the floor! lol

Just joking bro :)

Re:1.5 mile run challenge - 21 January 2009 21:16 ( #74 )
aye haha

Just to claryfy hthe marathon runners body would be so slight they wouldn't be able to lift the back end of the barrow of the floor never mind having the strength to push it along.

My end point really was you can still be quite fit but be an average runner.

A Lot of how good a runner depends on your build and if your muscles are loaded with white or red twitch fiber.  If your one of these with masses of white twitch balance and not much red you'll pretty much suck at running yet you can still be fit if you see my point.

BTW - I dint make up the speed, stamina, suppleness, and speed thing.  These are actually the key points of fitness.

Re:1.5 mile run challenge - 21 January 2009 22:58 ( #76 )
How Id love to be able to do anywhere near a half marathon  fella.

Im just not cut out for distance running though.  My natural build is fat too large.  However I dont try and use this as an excuse.  I still run 3 miles 3 times a week to make my cardio as good as it can be.

I think like in anything in life you can only play the hand your delt.

IE you may be super strong naturally or a superb runner.  (If your a superb runner you can normally bet your life your not super strong as these trates are as far at the  opposite  ends of the scale as there is I find) However natural runners should not be put off getting as strong as they can or vise versa.

My uni mate who is a great natural runner does weights.  I can virtually lift what he is lifting and him as well to give an idea.
Cant brag too much though as he can just turn up on one of my 3 milers and finnish and be back home with the kettle on by the time im half way blowing out my ass.
Still the most important point is, I keep running and he keeps weight lifting and we both make great gains co compared to our own untrained standards.

Can you run a half marathon now trident or are you building up the distance as you go? My max range without stopping would probs be a painfull 6 mile.

I got down to 10 mins 30 seconds ish when I was training to do this 3-4 months ago.  This was on a treadmill with 1 degree incline and approx 8.5mph.  Just stick the iPod on with some fast music and plough on.

Good effort m8.

Treadmill running is far easier than road running though.  Infact there incomparable.

Still, now that you have made it on the treadmill, do it for real outside.

Nice one Matt

Re:1.5 mile run challenge - 02 February 2009 22:13 ( #79 )
Hi all, new to this forum - and I have just started weights again.

I have enjoyed reading your comments here on 1.5 mile fitness.  As a serving soldier of 15 years, I would like to clarify that all male soldiers under the age of 30 must attempt and pass a 1.5 mile run (after an 800m warm up) in under 10mins 30secs.  This test is taken twice a year - failure means extra PT (hehe) until they do pass.  There are brackets for over 30s (you get an extra 30 seconds in each age bracket).

When I first joined, the test known as the BFT (Basic Fitness Test) was just a run (1.5 miles warm-up, 1.5 miles best effort).  Now you must run the test (as above), after completing 44 press-ups and 55 sit-ups, both of which must be done in 2 minutes each.

I have run my quickest PFT as its known as now in under 8mins 30secs.  And I'm not Infantry.  I achieved this when we mostly did circuit training and not long runs.  Bottom line is, if you want to excel at this pace and distance - interval training is key to building speed, ie 1 min sprint, 1 min jog (ideally the training should last twice as long as the time you are aiming for, ie 20 mins for a 10 min 1.5 mile).  As you start to find your sprints easier, cut down your jog time, but still keep your 1 minute sprints (you will rest less).  Eventually the goal is to run your 1 minute efforts back to back without the need for the rests, then you will be running a 1.5 mile in a very quick time.

Hope this helps!!
DGee
