Re:1.5 mile run challenge - 15 February 2009 22:30 ( #84 )
I have to reiterate what Thruster said.

I have been a serving soldier for 18yrs and at the grand old age of 43 I can still get sub 9 and thats after 90+ pressups and 70+ situps and I am not infantry either.

The old PFT standards were a good guide as to what is good and what is average.  a soldier was considered to be very fit if he could do 72+ pressups 78 situps and the 1.5mile run in less than 8:15. there was always a few guys in every company/Squadron who could manage this.

As Thruster said, to improve your 1.5m time then intervals are the key - once you have established a decent weekly base mileage.

One of my best times was 2 miles in under 20 mins carrying 56 pounds ( rifle, webbing, daysack and water wasnt counted as weight which was another 3 lb's). Not sure on the exact time but it was 19 mins something.
sub 10 mins for a mile and a half is achievable with moderate training.

Thankyouplease

As I said earlier the Royal Marines and other All Arms Commando courses have  do 9 miles in 90 mins carrying the same weight you mention above to pass the course.
I HATE this forum software!! The old one was miles better!!  Even my spell checker wont work on this!!

As a punishment, you will all have to put up with my pants spelling as I refuse to keep cutting and pasting to MS word and back.

Re:1.5 mile run challenge , THE CHALLENGE IS ON.... - 01 June 2009 00:03 ( #87 )
I have been running for about a year maybe and actually been trying this for the past three days and the standards are as follows:

Day 1 - 12:35
Days 2 - 10:40
Day 3 - 10:23

I feel that with a little extra training I am able to push it past the 10 minute mark and maybe even the 9 minute mark!

Army requirement for girls is 1.5 miles in 13 min. Did my first practice run last week in 11min but had some left in the tank. I'm aiming for sub-10min by the end of July when I go on PCCBC. Fingers crossed!

I am going to try this at the weekend, it is approximately (just under) 7 laps of our football pitch.  No idea how I'll do but it will be a good way to compare fitness.

might try this soon, as I've started running again. I'm very unfit compared to a few years ago though.

Nothing worse though than doing it on a track where you have to do laps (for me anyway).   Was based at a camp where we had to do three laps of an old airfield.  Never got a good time there.

That would snap me!

JimBob I reckon you would get a much better time if you did a straight (ish) road run.
