17 year old Nephew asking for what protein to take?!
20 January 2012 09:04
( permalink)
Hello! My nephew is very athletic and is involved with most sports. He is doing a sports course at college and has recently discovered the gym! He has broadened out naturally already but wants to make the best of his efforts down the gym. His routine isnt the greatest nor is his diet but im hesitant to straighten everything out for him as he is still young and will probably naturally grow even if the routine and diet arent spot on. I want to help him out to a degree but am unsure what to recommend. I will have a word about his diet but cant see being long before he discovers girls & drink and not worrying about the gym that much. I may be wrong but you know how it works!!! The only thing I thought was that he is at the age where he is growing quite a bit and Im pretty sure he doesnt get nutrition he needs. Diet is obviously very important but would anyone recommend a shake he could take a couple of times a day to help? I thought about a mass gainer to make sure he was taking in enough cals but im now thinking of something that possibly gives him ample protein, good carbs and maybe some vitamins etc. Is there anything out there that you guys could recommend? Cheers

Cheers guys. I dont really want to encourage him down the bodybuilding route at this stage. As I understand its not good at his age and my sister would kill me if he starts getting too much into it! Im willing to help him out on proteins etc but thats it for a couple of years!

Id say just go for any standard protein shake will do the trick just fine, just find any with good reviews, or whatever you take yourself (if you use protein shakes that is)

Educate him on diet and then he will be able to decide what type of powder he needs himself. Too many people take stuff as they think that is the done thing and they need it. He should only be using a protein powder if he understands the why and how of it.

John - totally agree with you. We all know that lifting weights isnt a simple thing as routine, diet, intensity, form......10 million other things are factors in their own right. I just dont want to fully go down the road of starting to get him 100% into it as I still think he is too young to be lifting proper weights. He will no doubt go and buy some anyway so prob best I advise him and as per previous comments, it can only assist. Perhaps him doing the shakes and not seeing the results he anticipates (because lacking proper diet etc) will make him think about other aspects and then I can educate him further. Cheers for all the input

Something like Nutrisport 90+ is a good value option, can buy from numerous supplement stores, or from eBay for not much more than £40 for 5kg with free shaker. Just explain to him that the more dedicated he is to training & nutrition, the better results he will get, and hence the more girls heads he will turn on the beach once he starts going on holidays with his mates ;-)

i dont think he is too young to lift proper weights, by proper you mean heavy? think about it, how many 15 and 16 year olds leave school to be builders - builders lift heavy sh1t every day. i think if he stuck to a progressive strenght programme for the next couple of years he would be setting himself up for good things in the future. If he lifts properly and takes his time to progress there should be no problems at all. education is key though

He'll be fine! And a lot stronger! :)

I tried Nutrisport once. In several flavours. It was God awful!! In every flavour! And that's coming from someone who usually just has unflavoured isolate and water.

yeah, ive read a few reports of people loving it but in all honesty of the dozens of comments of it ive seen on here the vast majority dislike, which is why i said something else might be a safer bet despite being a bit more expensive. personally never tried it, though have been tempted to get a 908g tub, as if i liked it it would certainly be a good cheap option

I find the chocolate has more of a milkshake taste than other proteins ive tried, although i read reports last year that they had altered the flavour & wasnt as nice....havent had any for a year or so so cant comment on if the flavour has changed. It also needed alot of liquid as it thickens up alot.
