3d or not 3d, that is the question................ 04 February 2012 14:54 (permalink)
So i am in the market for a new custard and am looking at upgrading to an LED (currently have 40" Samsung LCD) and hoping to gain a few inches (if only life was that easy! )

Been looking at 46" models and even a 47" LG but i am unsure whether to get a 3D model or not. I have tested both passive 3d and full 3d sets and they both look pretty good to me, but the reality is for my budget (6-700 quid) i would have to get a passive one in that size.

I just dont know whether to bother with 3d at all. I dont have sky 3d, aint got a 3d player and it would be just a case of "futureproofing" i guess.

Question is, should i bother? Pay more and get a better spec non 3d? Anyone have any experience with LG LED sets?

The model i am considering is the below (but def not from robdog Currys or Comet !)

I have a 3d TV which I bought specifically for purpose. However I fond myself using the 3D rarely, the odd film and for PS3 games (by far the best enhancement IMO).

Its a nice gimmick, but not that big a deal in reality.

I am team no 3d tbh.

I like 3d, films look awesome in it, but as something I would use often or pay extra for sky 3d it's not for me

I dont like it yet , it flickers when you pan your eyes across the screen , glasses are uncomfortable , athough as a gimmick and to show off some things look quite good

the nintendo 3ds is a lot better than shuttered lenses although wouldnt work for tvs .

I will stick with 2d for now

I was under the impression that a workable glasses free system was in development that would put all the glasses based systems to bed ?

3d will grow with time, more and more sport etc is being shown in 3d and more movies are being made with 3d now so while there isnt much need for a 3d tv right now, a few years down the line you'll find yourself using it more. you can also buy or rent a decent range of 3d blurays now too.

you could get a passive one for your budget yeah but check if they include glasses cos a lot dont and they are an expensive extra, they trick you that way.

if your upgrading now, may as well go for something that will serve you well years down the line

                        Forget 3D for now, IMO.
Wait until multi-angle 3D viewing is here, which won't be much longer.
I might buy a tv after I finish my degrees this year - it'll be a normal 1080p thing.

Sitting at home with some stupid glasses on isnt future proofing IMO, this is way early stage 3D.Not too distant future is some sort of holographic projection system or a flat screen that is multi angle.HD isnt even widely available let alone 3D.

                          Wait.

I have the Samsung UE46D8000 46" 3d LED TV and love it.
Its a little more than your price range, but i think 3d TV is excellent.
I got 2 glasses (active/shutter) with mine, but bought another 2 for £20 each, so not going to break the bank.

I play 3d blu rays through my PS3, and also play 3d games too.
Mine will also make 2d programs into 3d, which is a great gimmick when watching F1 or MotoGP.

Glasses free ones wont be available for mainstream and at an affordable price for another 5 years or so. I will be thinking about up grading by then possibly.

Whether you should get one or not is a question only you can answer. Some people really like it (like me) and others dont care for it.

3D is hardly a new thing, its actually been around since the beginning of film more or less - it has had its revivals and is hailed as the next big thing every time.

There are several systems on the horizon without glasses although from what I have seen I'm not overly impressed - autostereoscopic and lenticular to name two.

I personally never intended to buy a 3D TV but I did over Christmas, but only because I needed a new DVD player and could not see the point of purchasing a standard PAL DVD.  So I decided to buy a BluRay player which as I looked into made me realise they would not work with a standard PAL CRT, so I bit the bullet and walked in on Christmas Eve and purchased an entire 3d kit - 40" LED Sony Bravia full HD with Freeview HD built in/internet ready, 3D BluRay player and glasses.  BAscially the whole package came in at £729, which I though was brilliant.  The picture quality is spot on and although I'm not overly bothered by the 3D its nice to have the option on occasion, for the extra £100, it is worth it for me.  However I do only have one TV in the house, although it has made my projection setup kind of redundant - oh well.

I was under the impression that a workable glasses free system was in development that would put all the glasses based systems to bed ?

i think all of those have you standing on an x marked on the floor , dont think one exists that dos muliple viewing angles

Thats what I mean , IIRC Sony or someone demo'd a TV that worked from any angle at CES , and I think Toshiba are supposedly not far behind ?

I think LG are the biggest contender for a glasses free set up - they seem to be the ones pushing for it most.

Some people really like it (like me) and others dont care for it.

have a couple of these at work and have to admit they have the best picture i have seen, they even make choppy SD look good .
