53 years old training to lose weight and gain muscle but 19 August 2011 10:48 (permalink)

i have always trained in a gym with other people and have not really seen any gains in muscle or fat loss (mainly due to natttering more than training and it not taking much to stop) i am also a beer drinker. recently ive built a gym in my house and have really stepped up to the mark . i have not lost any weight  but loads of inches round my stomach and some noticeable gains in muscle especially since going to a mainly one body part a day(4 days a week) training over the last 4 months . people have started noticing (which i like) that my body shape is proper changing.  at first i found it invigorating and seemed to have an excess of energy but the last 2 weeks i feel tired and dont seem to be recovering from my workouts very well. (at all some days)
a typical week for me
monday , chest  4sets x 10 flat bench press
                          4 setsx10 incline bench
                           3 sets decline bench
followed by 3x10 sets of cable incline decline and flat cable flys and 3x10 press ups to finish.
next training day
back , 4 sets of wide grip pull ups as many as i can do
           same narrow grip pull ups
most days this is around 2-4 pull ups (ime 5ft6 and 92kgs)
forward facing pulldowns 4x10
    rear facing pulldowns  4x10
4 sets of reverse press ups holding on smith machine bar and feet on bench
and finish back with bent over rowing
biceps 3x10 of dumbell curls ,hammer curls and concentration curls
next training day
shoulders and triceps
3x10 of forward lift side lift and rear lift
4x10 dumbell press or barbell
4x10 upright rowing
and 3x10 shrugs
3x10 tricep pulldowns
next training day legs is anything i can manage because of knee problems but mostly walking upstairs (across road from me is 119 steps long ones and i might do these twice up and down)
i finish most training sessions breathing fairly heavily and knowing ive done one
most days will finish this with a sauna
cardio at minute is mainly walking dog
i have at least 2 and max 4 protien drinks a day and take vit supplements every day. i eat a good varied diet with plenty of fish veg fruit and quorn products(semi veggie i think they call it) and also drink plenty of fluids.
i get plenty of rest sessions .
i am MORE  than happy with gains made in last few months BUT its the tiredness thing thats kicked in after training and sometimes lingering into next day thats getting me down. do i need to be doing something different , alter training ,taking something different to aid recovery . CAN any of you other older chaps help please.
sorry to have gone on but thought it better to put what i do down in full so best help can be offered

hey m8 well done for stepping up the mark sometimes we all need a break if ur tired then maybe thats a sign that ur bodies telling u to slow down for abit give it time to recover you will find u wont make much more gains if any if ur bodies not recovering (take a week off) the way to do it is to do enuf not over train as you get older you will start to get more tired quickly and take lil bit more time to recover if i was you i would drop the weight a little bit and aim for doing 12 to 15 reps which will be better on ur joints ect.... if ur getting a lot of knee pain make sure u wear proper knee supports and if you are doing some cardio go swimming its a better all round workout and a lot easier for you joints if ur 5.6 and 92kg u must be caring a bit heavy there m8
you could even change ur routine to 3days a week to something like
    monday- chest and back
    wednesday legs
    friday shoulders and biceps, triceps
this way ur getting more rest days in aweek which in turn will be better for ur recovery so u mite not feel so tired
hope this has helped you a bit m8
    gd luck

thanks steve more or less thought i was overtraining . when i first started at home i was training 6 days with one off and got for me some incredible gains and stomach fast going . i couldnt wait on a morning to get back in and do some more (i really dont know where the energy was coming from)then dropped to 5 days then 4 then 3  and then the muscle ache came in and energy dropped somedays to rock bottom. just going to do some light training next week then i am on holiday  so will get plenty of rest and hopefully come back raring to go again. i have got to say that just prior to the tiredness i was probably feeling the best ive felt for 20 years. on a lighter note does your user name come from dogs you keep. i used to have 2 beautiful bullmastiffs a bitch weighing in at 8.5 stone and a dog i bred from her weighing in at 13.5 stone and not a bit of fat on either. bitch was areal throwback to when they were bodyguard dogs for gamekeepers ,she wouldnt let anyone near me she didnt know. dog was just a big idiot who just followed whatever his mum did but on his own a real character nice natured. ive got one of those old tyme bulldogs now and shes just a good natured baffoon (to be polite to her). again thanks for answering  bryan

Bit late on this thread, sorry. Have a look at: http://www.cbass.com/ for articles on older people training and getting exellent results. I would suggest training twice per week on a full body routing - compound exercises for one or two sets each. As someone who is now a proper grown up you should insert some short sharp anerobic sprinting type exercises in somewhere  in order to maintain and develop your aerobic capacity.
