Advice Please - new routine 24 February 2010 08:31 (permalink)
Hi all

I am new to this forum although not new to training but wanted some advice i have always trained specific muscle groups on specific days BUT have been advised recently that i would be better off doing 2 days total body routines which are as  follows :
day 1
front squat / push press with bar bell
Lateral lunges with medicine ball
dumbell 2 point  roe
press ups on the bosu
static lunges (back leg elevated)
smith machine pullups
bench dips
swiss ball crunches
reverse crunches
medicine ball side bends

day 2
dumbell clean and press
deadlifts
incline bench press
wide grip pull down
wide squats
swiss ball pullover with barbell
swiss ball hip extension leg curl
plank - leg raise
side plank (pulses)
swiss ball crunches
cobras

These days are done in a super sets for example the first 2 then the next 2 and so on (hope that makes a little sense !

I am not sure about this routine and maybe because i am "out of my comfort zone" but i don't feel like i am achieving anything any thoughts would be greatly appriciated.

On day 3 i would just do cardio.

Thanks in advance

Hi Frances and welcome to MT

Do you train in a health chain type gym? There are some good exercises in those but if you're not enjoying it or prefer to spit your body as previously then go for it. There's nothing wrong in being taken out of your comfort zone and a lot of the time that's what we do with weight training by pushing for heavier weights each time to progress but also trying new exercises when the body accustoms itself to what you've been doing over the last few weeks.

You say you're not achieving anything but what are you trying to achieve? Maybe the person who set this up for you didn't understand or hasn't a clue

      Thanks Kitty

Yes it is a health club tyoe gym and i have been more used to "heavier" gyms but due to work location etc this works.  Main goal at the mo is to get some fat off but what i am concious of is loosing strength this routine was designed a "fat loss" routine however i am aware of diet etc in this on day 3 it would be a cardio day

Any exercise is going to help towards fat loss as you're being active and burning off calories. If you are doing that routine and supersetting then it's acting as a form of cardio too. If you prefer to lift heavy and do cv as a separate entity then go for it. Exercise has to be enjoyable as we wouldn't stick with it.

Thank you Kitty to be fair i always "enjoy" being in the gym bit wierd i know but like the feeling of lifting and cardio guess i just wanted another opinion and feel bad when someone does you a routine and then you don't do it.  I was wondering if i could do a week of this and the three of my "old"

Hey there are no hard and fast rules as to what to do when you get in the gym. As I said, the main thing is to enjoy it but do not feel oblige to stick with a routine because someone else designed it for you and you don't feel it's working. Very likely that routine is a set one that everyone gets given when they sign up so don't feel guilty if you don't want to do it.

Kitty you have hit the nail on the head i do see others doing it  which puts me off.  Also another question if you don't mind cardio how many mins again hard for me to do in the morning at the mo but on average after traing i am just really fed up of being over weight

You need to try and get in at least 5 hours if you're looking for weight loss. Doesn't have to be in hour slots. If you find you're short of time then that's when you incorporate the HIT stuff.
