Advice on buying a weight bench... 03 March 2010 11:37 (permalink)
I’m just recovering from a SLAP tear operation, I’m 5 months out. At 6 months I can start light training again. I haven’t trained in about 2 year since my injury first began. I’ve just bought a new house and can’t afford a gym membership just yet. I have a garage with a squat rack, Olympic weight set and some decent dumbbells from when I was a teenager though. What I’m missing is an adjustable weight bench (utility bench I think they’re called) to fit into my squat rack, so I can do bench press/ inclines etc. I have less than £200, (£150 would be better) to spend and don’t have any idea what is good quality or not at this price. I’d just like a nice strong/solid, adjustable bench.

Any advice would be great, thank you.

        Welcome to Muscletalk!

        You will easily get something decent within that price range. Used ex-commercial gear is a good option, subject to it's condition of course.

        For new though, i do rate the Body-Solid kit as good stuff for the average home gym. Is does depend on how much you lift, but something like this would be suitable for most i'd say.....

          Hello there! Thank you for the replies. I’ve been looking through the website those benches recommended were from and have found two that I like...

          [link=http://www.fitness-superstore.co.uk/utility_benches/bodysolid_flat_incline_bench_grey/7086_p.html]http://www.fitness-supe...e_bench_grey/7086_p.html[/link]

          [link=http://www.fitness-superstore.co.uk/utility_benches/bodysolid_flat_incline_decline_bench_grey/7087_p.html]http://www.fitness-supe...e_bench_grey/7087_p.html[/link]

          Any thoughts on those benches?

          Before I was injured I was benching around 90kg 10x on an incline bench press and would now and again put about 125kg on for a couple of reps, so nothing seriously heavy. I assume I won’t need a terminator of a bench to hold those sorts of weight. I won’t be using anywhere near that amount for the first year or so while I get my shoulder back in action so this shouldn't be a problem.

            The 2nd bench (£199 one) is one i do like the look of. It's one i've contemplated getting myself. In fact i was going to put the link for that one in my first post, but it was'nt quite the budget you said you wanted, plus the other bench is more than likely fine for the weights you'd be using on it.

              I have the powertec utility bench and very pleased with it. It has that sturdyness that gives you confidence. Same price £199 too.

              Remember when checking bench capacity to include your bodyweight too.
