Aims for 2010??
-
10 November 2009 15:20
Just wondering what all your aims were for next year, be it a new PB or aims for titles etc?? Mine is to get at least a top 3 at WSM (hopefully number 1) and win BSM if it happens! Will probably compete a little less next year and concentrate on the big contests!

good luck with that, although im sure its more grit, hard work and determination than luck, but you know what i mean :) me...pull 200k (only another 10k to go) will probably have it done by feb. if i do, do you think that a 5 plate deadlift would be do-able by the end of next year?

I would like to actually win a competition rather than coming 2nd or 3rd! Improve my overhead and squat, whilst continuing to push my good events. Stay happy and healthy too.

Not suck so much at equipped powerlifting :) More specifically get into the low-mid 700kg total mark. Plus to be in good enough raw shape to have a good go at placing in GBPF Unequipped Champs next september. And finally get my deadlift mojo back!

Actually mate I wasn't going to say that. All I was going to say was quote your post saying you turned 20 end of August and then put under "Therefore losing our bet! " Not thought about next years goals yet, but I guess they'd be something like: Top 3 at Scotland's, qualify for UKs and BSM (permitting if it's on) Do well at the Arnold's Am contest in March 330k belt only deadlift 310k wrapped squat 180k jerk from rack Then apart from the above, just up weakness' like conditioning, log and viking press.

I still want the 200kg bench and world record 2 hand pinch at the Whey Power Challenge and then to win the British Grip and Euro grip in 2010 before retiring from active competition. Outside of my own personal gym and competition targets I'm working with (and would like to add a few more) athletes whose aims become my aims. So I have one who's best bench is 120kg and I am working with him to get a 140kg effort at Xmas and another I wanna work with to get him into the Marine Commandos. I'd like to add a a grip guy to that list and make him either a champ or a record breaker (just not my records ha ha).

Good to see the brits being well represented Aye mate, contacted Dione Wessels to say that I was very keen to do it. She said that I'd be very welcome and to contact the guy doing the UK Invites. There was another athlete before me, but he turned it down so I got a place. As far as I know it's Rob Frampton, Jay Hughes, Paul "Cuddles" Carter, Andy Cairney and me. Really looking forward to it, events are heavy and right now only thing I would 'worry' about is the log, but after 4more months training I'm confident I'll get upto where I want to be. Really hope you get to go to Arnolds Pro mate, we'll be watching the Pro show after our comp on the Friday and then Saturday too. Do you know when the invites are given out bud?

A lot have already gone out but not all of them!! I really know I can do some serious damage given the chance! I may have weakness in the db and axle but I have a genuine chance of winning the others if I am in shape! We will see

I'd like to say "dead lift 300Kg before Carl does", but I think he'll get there before I do! A couple of short-term lifting targets I've got are - raw squat 220Kg (almost there) and power clean 120Kg (I know I could do it now if my technique wasn't ****e). Apart from that - just keep improving, don't get injured, and hopefully put in some decent comp performances! I'd also like to 'pinch' a pair of 20Kg discs with one hand (see Sugden). Oh, and get on TV again - for more than 10 seconds!!!

Oh, and get on TV again - for more than 10 seconds!!! Easy to train for. Take a pair of 15's and stick a loading pin through the holes. Train until good. Add a small disc each side (1.25's), repeat until strong. Keep going until you hit 2 x 15's plus 7.5-10 kilos added and then try a pair of 20's with no pin (as the pin makes it a tad easier). Job done. Next. It'll take about 6-8 weeks.

Steve, what would you describe as a world class one handed pinch (for men)? A pair of 25Kg plates maybe?? Thanks for the training advice. I have no trouble with a pair of 15Kg plates, and have also done them with a light chain threaded through - just to add a little extra resistance.

A pair of 20's is still a good feat. A pair of 25's would be better. David Horne's WR of 67+ kilos has been unbeaten (using a special set up) for years.

Lift targets: Suited deadlift from 305kg to 325kg Raw deadlift from 290kg to 310kg Push Press from 140kg to 155kg Squat from 272.5kg to 290kg Event targets: Get my log clean and press to a reasonable standard, ideally 130kg plus. Poor at the moment due to lack of practice (want a log for Christmas :) ) Improve my speed and conditioning a little, particularly with yoke and farmers Work on both aspects of my grip (will be talking to Steve about this one next time Im at the Whey ;-) ) Try to get my bodyweight up a bit from the 280 - 285lbs I'm currently sitting at Essentially I just want to keep improving and enjoying it, I had a good year this year with a 5th place in an intermediate, and then a 5th in an open comp, putting me a year ahead of schedule

800kg total @ 82.5kg/90kg would be sweet. Something like 330, 150kg, 320. I'll be there or there abouts on the sq and dl just crack on with bench.

Goals for next year (or after)- 400kg squat 200kg+ bench 350kg deadlift 1000kg single ply total would be nice at some point in the near future. All stepping stones until I can get back into strongman, that's where the love's at!
Squat: 363kg Bench: 195kg Deadlift: 300kg @ (currently 114kg) ...soon to be obliterated!

You use a couple of fingers of the non-working hand to help pull the set up upwards and then use ONLY the working hand for negatives.

Thanks for that tip, Steve. Do you think piching has any carry-over to other types of gripping (like keeping hold of farmer's walk handles)?

A little. Pinch works the thumb well and that'll mean a better grip because you'll oppose the fingers better and be better able to lock the thumb over the fingers in farmers hold type movements.

240kg deadlift for 4x4 180kg squats for 4x4 120kg Bench for 4x4 They are my rough targets for this time next year but as long as I keep going like I have been for the last 6/9 months next year I will be happy. I would also like to cut some body fat back and hopefully do my first comp at 90kg.

My aims for next year are to bring up my squat and deadlift to 300kg currently on 260 raw just a belt and to improve my push press to around the 180 mark on 140 now for 3 that was heavy but my shoulders arent as strong as they should be and i want to improve my log lifting, made a new one a couple of weeks ago its 13 inches thick and its 75kg before any weight goes on it. I will also be helping to get two of my mates british powerlifting champs again ones 75 unequipped and the other is going for the raw and equipped titles hes in the 56 catergory

Hard to set goals for next year at moment. Due to the fact that I tore my bicep in last comp, not sure how bad it is yet have just been for MRI today. So I guess goals are to get over injury how long this will be will depend on weather scan shows i need an op or not. Worse case scinario will be to hopefully get some comps in twards end of summer.
