Am I training correctly? 07 February 2012 10:27 (permalink)

Hello everyone.

Im new to the forum hopefully you'll be able to help me out and give me a few tips.

Ive been in and out of a few gyms for a couple of years however a new gym has recently opened and ive officially got the bug for training.

Ive been going just short a month now. I train something dfferent everyday, normally my routine consists of monday : shoulder
tuesday: chest
wednesday:arms biceps, triceps
thursday:back
 then rest and repeat.

im currently21,  14st 8lbs, ive gained 4lb since i started training is this good?

i take Hyperbolic Muscle Mass, recomended by a trainer at the gym for my height and weight 4 scoops and 4 servings a day. however doing this a 2kg tub lasts about a week?

Im also taking alpha test which are a testosterone booster, 3 times a day. and a pre trainer "no explode 2"

bassially i want to know whether im on the right track, i try and make sure  do everything properly, one of the lads that owns the gym ensures i have the correct technique with lifting etc, however when you ask questions it seems everyone tells you something different.

how do i know if im over training? i typically spend about 40 mins to an hour in the gym once a day. also,  without being impatient because i apreciate these things do not happen over night, when can you start to see results from your training?

thanks.
gaz

    I'd say no.

As a beginner you'll make gains no matter what you do, so it's not critical at the moment - but you've started on a poor footing. Is the personal trainier on commission? Sounds like it. I do hope they've had no input to your routine either because no professional should put a programme like that together.

It could be loads better as it is just awful, added to spending a load of cash on expensive supplements so early on, the whole thing is simply a waste of money and effort.

It's so wrong I'm tempted to think you might be trolling, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

Before you dive into spending a fortune on supplements that are arguably rubbish anyway you need to just concentrate on your diet. It costs nothing to alter your diet and in the early stages of training will be the most effective thing you can do.

Your programme is all chest, shoulders and arms with a bit of back. That's poor. You need to get the legs trained and give the back at least as much time as every other bodypart. Arms don't need their own day.

Stick to free weights, compound moves. Compounds are those which use more than a single joint / muscle group, so:
    Squat
    Deadlifts
    Bench Press
    Military Press
    Dips
    Chins and Pull Ups
    Rows
    Lat Pull Downs

Afetr this, if you can manage, you can throw in a few arm isolations but if you're training right you should not need to.

so its not good to train a different body part every day then? noones puts this routine together this is something ive started with as a beginer using freinds advice.

ive changed my diet aswell, ive cut snacks out completely, mainly eating pasta, tuna, chicken, also i make sure i have a bowl of oats every morning i was told oats slowly release protien?

Oats are slow release carbs, not protein - but they are great for spotspeople and trainers, so stick with them.

If you're looking to gain mass, you might have to put those snacks back in, but keep them clean and high in protein with a few complex carbs too. This is where your supplements might come in handy, a protein shake between meals can be a good way to supplement your diet, but supplement is the key word, get most of your nutrients from real food. I'd ditch the Tes Booster, personally I think they're a scam.

It looks like you're getting poor advice from a number of angles. It's not a big deal, as a beginner all your lifting so far will be in the bank but now you need to stop, take a look and get it right.

A couple of things, training a different bodypart everyday is ok, but nowhere near the best, but more than this, you're not doing that anyway:

You're training arms every day, shoulders three times a week (shoulders get trained with the chest and back naturally), chest once and back once. No legs. That's not a bodypart a day. That's tons of arms and shoulders nearly every day.

You can either do a full body programme, where you do one exercise per bodypart everyday, or even better in my opinion go for a pull/push/legs, 3 days a week.

If you look in the routines section on this site there are good routines that are tried and tested that will give you results.

thankyou very much this has been very helpful. im going to have a look at the pull push legs routine and sort something out. i didnt realise that doing what i was doing was actually training so many other muscles, hense after a while this would be overtraining and i would never gain anything anyway?

Overtraining is quite hard to do, but if you are looking to buid mass as your main priority less will certainly be more on some of your bodyparts.

Make sure you are hitting those big compounds though, and get those legs trained, it's very important. They stimulate a lot of natural hormone realease due to the size of the muscle in the legs - this will assist your overall growth, squatting can help your biceps grow, stangely.

yes ive been told about squatting and deadlifting, however because im so tall i struggle to keep my back straight, caused myself a small injury a while back and steered away ever since. im just looking at the 3 day a week push pull legs workout. im gunna give it a go and let you know how i get on.

Form is incredibly important with squats and deads. I suspect the taller you are then this could be more difficult, but some of the powerlifters I train with are up and around 6'6"+ and they can slam out some big old sets. There's a few active strongmen on this forum that are big guys, they'll be able to give you tips. Go on the power and strength thread, there are international class powerlifters and strongmen on there that are very tall who'll give you top advice.

If youi get good advice, start slowly on easier weights and build up steadily you should be able to progress. Once that core thickens and you get some real muscle maturity the weights will go up.

Ditch the test booster for one thing, and tell the guy who recommended it to you that CK from MuscleTalk says he's an idiot (my name carries a lot of weight, so this will crush him).

You don't need a pre-wo supp or a weight gainer either. It's amusing and worrying that a professional would recommend a weight gainer for you rather than actually explaining to you the principles of nutrition, but then he almost certainly had some vested interest in you buying it. Obviously a weight gainer isn't dangerous or anything like that, just completely pointless especially if you haven't adjusted your diet as a whole.

Re routine, Basically just listen to Bollard!
