An answer / advice needed about "skull crushers"

Hi all, was down the gym last night and have started a brand new split routine, was doing that routine and noticed something odd. Well for me that is, probably for you experienced BB's a normal thing. I was doing skull crushers and with at first I was doing them with a DB at 24Kg Then I thought let's try it with a BB, as I am finding my way round the new routine. To my surprise with the BB I could only just manage 17.5Kg??? Can anybody explain why this is? Are different muscles being used? or is it because the grip is different? I was really baffled by this. Thanks in advance for any answers / advice Peter

Hi, and thanks for the reply. The BB's at my gym, are not bars with seperate weights, but they are all-in-one, so the weight is actually 17.5Kg including the bar.

ahh I see, like you say it is most likely a grip thing, or it could be your doing it slightly wider on the bar than you would on the dumbells or maybe you had used all your energy on the first set and simply had nothing else to give. Test that theory next time you go and go straight in for the Bar instead. Hope this helps mate your doing the right thing asking for advice on here, I have been helped no end by some people on here as we all share a common interest.

Oh and it will defo use extra parts of your triceps due to the extra length of the bar so it will use a bit more of the tri than dumbells

Hi again Colonel :-) Yeah it might be that I used too much energy in the first 2 sets, and that it is a diffewrence in the grip, as with the DB my hands are virtually together, and with the BB they are at shoulder width, so must be that. That has made up my mind then lol, a bit less weight and using more muscles does it for me. Thanks again for taking the time to reply Have a great weekend Peter
