Another question, this time about splits 11 January 2010 21:18 (permalink)
Ok, got another question, was in the gym tonight and someone who I've got to know was there and he was asking me what I was doing. I told him splits and was doing shoulder and triceps. I normally do one shoulder, one tricep, and repeat. I also do the same when it comes to chest and biceps. He told me it was much better to do all the shoulder exercises back to back then all the triceps exercises.I thought about it and I couldn't see sense as I was thinking both muscles are worked and thats why the two are done together. Every chest and shoulder exercise works the triceps secondary, so did it really matter if I did one set then the other. When I asked him for an explanation I just got the impression that it was his personal preference.
So does it matter, is he right in what he says or can I still alternate. I understand I need to work larger body parts first and I always start on shoulders (or chest) when I do the splits. He says I'll get much bigger doing it his way.

Hope this post makes sense.

I'd always advocate doing bigger bodyparts first, with your more compund exercises first such as Shoulder Press.

The whole point in doing all Shoulders at once is that you really exhuast them before moving on to your 'helper' muscles in the triceps that assist these movements.

Also, if you do Shoulder, tricep, shoulder tricep... then you're giving each part time to rest technically, in between exercises, minimising stress on the muscle - not necessarily the best mechanism for growth.

    Does that make sense?
