Any advice on choosing which comp to enter as a newbie? 04 September 2011 18:54 (permalink)
At the moment I am just shooting for being ready around May next year, really unsure what is best to do/what I can even enter.

BNBF - what shows would a newbie be looking to enter?

Going to be looking at getting a proper trainer to supplement my OH's training end of October after my exams, but work need me to book anytime off by end of September. So need to get myself in gear!!

Any advice would be great
Thanks in advance!

Hi, I'm competing with BNBF next year for the first time, I'm probably going for the centrals qualifier, but also thinking of the London one .
Here's a list of next years qualifiers, copied from their site

-London Qualifier:  London Excel SENI 2nd-3rd June 2012
Scottish Qualifier: Perth Concert Hall 10th June 2012
Southern Qualifier: Alexandra Theatre Bognor Regis 24th June 2012
Welsh Qualifier: Dolman Theatre Newport 8th July 2012
Central Qualifier: Alban Arena St Albans 22nd July 2012
Northern Qualifier: RNCM Manchester 12th Aug 2012
Possible Midland Qualifier: Aug Date TBC

Hope this helps, I'm sure some of the more experienced competitors will a long soon

I think the London SENI show will be busy, but an AMAZING experience! The Centrals is still my fave stage to stand on, and always a great turn out :-)
Welsh and Scottish are quieter shows for ladies and the Southern is definitely growing in numbers too.

I'll either be onstage at Southern or Centrals myself!

We've got some lovely ladies competing in the BNBF. Everyone backstage is really helpful and biased as I may be I do think it's a good fed for first time experience. If you're doing figure we don't have a posing routine but a "T" walk. Much as I love being part of the pro team, I do miss the backstage banter.

Often we'll have one before Christmas, then in January the hard work starts! :-D

I have to learn to T-Walk too! I did one at the last club and although I can walk in shoes, and pose, I was petrified and shaking like a leaf! Everyone thought it was hysterical (except me) :-(

Hiya, I competed this year for the first time - with BNBF. So friendly, yet very professional, backstage people are wonderful (I had no idea what I was doing - I was kind of in a daze, I'm sure they thought I was thick!) Great shows for your spectators too, my Mum is now a BB convert!

I suppose one thing to think about it - should you qualify and take up your place at the finals - how long between qualifier and finals. Too long? Not long enough? In terms of carrying on diet/having a break if you need it/trying to make any changes as per judges' feedback.

                        ENJOY! :)

What you have to remember though Nic is most newbie's don't think that way....  They just wanna get the first one out of the way, with little thought to 'afterwards'. Enjoy the first experience, worry about the 'after's' later
Remember when I talked to you before your first qualifier and I told you I bet you'd win? Remember what you said? Something along the lines of "I can't even think about it"

I've been thinking about this now only because I want to get a holiday booked next summer. Here's my dilema, the holiday I want to go on coincides with the NABBA Britain! The Northwest isn't a problem and I'll get in couple of open shows before this.

Would it be too ambitious of me to think I might get to the Britain?Or should I be realistic since we haven't a clue what I'm going to look like, never mind which class - if I'm too hard for Tone F I'll have to do Trained and I know I probably won't be able to place in that one.

I can chose a later holiday BUT if I don't get to the Britain I might want to do the England, then UK competition in Autumn - which the alternative date would interupt prep for, or even clash with.

So do I decide I'm just going to accept competing in the qualifier for now and take the holiday I want to, and risk being galled if I do qualify BUT then going on to do the UK, OR do I book the later one and hope it doesn't mess me up if I do have to do the UK later on?

There is another option, there is a date shortly after the Britain that costs £80 more............will interupt prep for autumn by 1 week, so would have to start almost immediately after the qualifier to make up for it.

                              I'd say this from experience:
NEVER take a holiday IF you've got another show to prep for, it's the hardest/not nicest thing ever... You should enjoy holidays!
On the are you being too ambitious? Hell no! If that's what you want then strive towards it.

Indeed - I didn't want to think about it but I knew I ought to (and did) - hence my other email to you later on about holiday dates :) I guess what I was trying to say was yes of course concentrate on one show at a time and enjoy the moment but if you think you'll qualify, and you'd want to carry on, take that into account amongst everything else too. :)
