We're not talking body building size though are we? Tyson physique (in the ring) above wouldn't be classed as a competition body building physique.

exactly!! its all wel and good sayin a fighter at 20-30% is fitter thana shredded BBer, but no one said he owuldnt be.. tyson isnt a BBer, brock isnt a BBer, couture isnt a BBer, arlovski wasnt a Bber.. but all are in v good shape in the heavy division.. fairly well muscled guys do have a plce in the sport.. and obviously too much muscle will hinder them.. but look at brock for example.. biggest guy in the division, and probs one of the fittest

the top mma guys are all in reasonably good shape, this is ultimate fighter though, these guys arent the top end, they are "up and comers" (apparently anyway) I agree, 260lb of muscle would be better than 260lb of fat, but this is one of the reasons why these guys are on the show and gassing, they arent at the top end of the scale. Also, lets not forget adrenaline dumps, nerves, the pressure of being so close to the big time etc, all of that would affect the true beginners greatly.

Fair play, I think a tyson style physique would look good and does have it's place in the HW divsion, and there are a few who aren't far off that look. I'd like to see more HW's look like this but as a lot are saying looks mean jack sh1t in the ring/cage.

i agree mate.. in the cage it means jack sh1t.. i think it is better for the UFC as an organisation to have guys who have admirable physiques tho wouldnt u agree?? obviously many would love the skill of fedor, he is a freak.. but imagine if all the champs in each division looked as poor as sylvia,or nelson..?? wouldnt be the best advertisement for the sport imo. thats why haye winnin the heavyweight belt is a good thing for boxin also..

Why does it matter what they look like? Its not a beauty contest!!! Your not going to get fatties in the lighter weight classes anyway.

RACK I agree with that point mate about them being more admirable totally. Why though mate? Are you talking from a 'poster boy' style perspective to represent the sport?

like i said, yeh from an image point of view to sell the company... sylvia even said, the main reason he took gear was because no one wanted t sponsor a fatty like him.. yeh the gear helped him get more in shape, but he had a better overall image which helped him secure better sponsorship deals.. in the ring, nope it doesnt matter.. of course not... but if UFC was full of fatties, it wouldnt be half as big as it is now.. truth is, people look up to people who have skill and look in amazin shape.. yeh the look has no baring on skill, but it sells the company better than the physique of someone like sylvia would

if they were all ripped and massive, then it calls into question much more heavily drug use, something they dont want attatched to the sport (regardles of wether it is or not) if they have the CV fitness to fight for rounds, then their bf doesnt matter one little bit. a much bigger guy will always gas quicker, as the oxygen demands are much larger, regardless of bodyfat. and for the people suggesting they should 'cut down 20%bf, and gain it back in muscle' seriously, have you ever been in a gym? do you know how hard that is to do? they train for MMA not what they look like. remember also, that these guys arent the elite, they are fighting for a break in the sport, at which point they will then have time and support to train more and perfect not only their fighting but athletic abilities, which MAY improve their bodyfat levels.

not sure u could count nelson as elite anymore!! he got KO'd big time by Arlovski, arlovski got KO'd by rogers, rogers got KO'd by fedor.. he's way down the peckin order now, not just in strikeforce.. i agree with what everyone's sayin really.. u dont have to be ripped at all.. from a fighting point of view it makes no difference, although imo, the fittest guys in the ufc tend to look good too- sherk, ortiz, franklin, GSP, with a few exceptions.. but there are some who look great but gas quick, therefore arent the fittest.. but yeh, these guys arent the elite, and imo, for them to become elite, they will need t drop some weight and by doin so, will probably improve their appearance..

Ive noticed this aswell, a lot of the guys could easily make LHW as they are a bit fat but as said before the guys who look most physically able often A) cant fight or B) have **** cardio.

dazc and for the people suggesting they should 'cut down 20%bf, and gain it back in muscle' seriously, have you ever been in a gym? do you know how hard that is to do? they train for MMA not what they look like. Just because they train for MMA doesn't give them an excuse to be that fat. Its like saying "I don't care if I'm at 35% bf, I train for marathon running not for looks". So what if you're training for a marathon, your fat is still slowing you down and you will be a better and faster runner once you drop your bf by 20%. I never said it was easy but its possible. Tell me that Nelson wouldn't be a better fighter if he dropped 10-15% of his current bf and then replaced that with muscle? Yes it would take a lot of effort but its not impossible and surely if he is wanting to be a pro MMA fighter then the sacrifice is worth it.

Yes it would take a lot of effort but its not impossible and surely if he is wanting to be a pro MMA fighter then the sacrifice is worth it. you have no idea of the amount of work what your suggesting would take. absoloutely no idea. and it would require drugs use too. sure, say he would be better if he lost a bit of fat, i actually agree with that bit to a point, but to then causually tag onto the end of that 'and replace it with muscle' just shows you have no idea what it takes to build a large lean physique. and thats without fight training. and there are situations where just being heavier is a distinct advantage. full mount for example, the more weight the less chance of losing it.
