Arms - Am i doing too much? 12 March 2010 00:04 (permalink)
Jus need a bit of input on my workout

my workout is as follows

close bench press
after warm up of 60*12
85*12
105*9
125*3 drop down to 105 for another 3

over head 1dumbbell tricep extension
24 - warm up
34 - 12
42 - 12
50 - 9 reps - cant go higher than this due to this being the highest dummbell in my gym  - fitness first for you

At this point I do my first exercise on biceps - last week i did 21s

20 Kg Barbell
30 Kg Barbell
40 Kg Barbell - drop down to 30 and then 20 to get the 21 reps

Dips * 2 sets

Preacher Curls - One Arm

21s took it out of me so did 14s then 16s only for 8 reps each arms - like to twist out at the top this has been working great for peaking
Rope Pushdowns 8 3 sets

Hammer Curls 2 sets
Cable Curls - 2 sets mainly focus on drop and negatives on this

Do you guys think this is  too much as my arms are only 16.5 inches and thats when i curl them (not pumped)??

What is your overall workout like?

IMO if that workout was split onto two days e.g. Chest +  Biceps and then Shoulders + Triceps the  exercises which you are doing for your biceps/triceps wouldn't be too much. Hitting your arms like that in one session could be too much.

I wouldn't care about the weight of what you're lifting, or what the guy in the gym can lift, or the size of your arms.  It's about effort not weight.  I lift a lot less than most, in terms of actual weight but it seems that's all my body needs to grow (not that I could lift more anyway)

i totally agree its not about weight - the point for my q was to see if im doin too much volume in relation to my workout and whether people do alot less for more gains - in terms of effort i train pretty hard and do the above workout within 40-45 mins max

i do a 5 day split - one body part at a time

But you're doing one session for biceps and triceps, that's two body parts not one?

What's the rest of your routine like just out of interest?

                  Very true!

I hate seeing people using shocking technique (swinging the arms etc) just so they can use the bigger dumbells, lol. I only use 12/14kg dumbells and concentrate on performing the exercise with good form

I've been training for around 4 years now

ok …well  i like to do bis and tris together - just feels better, get a better pump that way and also have tried doin them with other things but feel like i cant go as hard as I like to
Rest of my routine would be something like

                    Chest
Incline Dumbbells supersetted with Incline Flyes (Started doing these recently and think these are excellent)
                    Flat Dumbbells
                    Decline Press
                    Cable Flyes
Normally do traps with Chest as well

                    Back
                    Wide Grip Pulldowns
                    V Bar Rows
                    Plate Loaded machine rows
                    Bar Rows (Reverse)
                    Deadlifts or Rack Deadlifts
                    Rear Delt Cables

                    Shoulders
                    Smith Machine Press
                    Clean and Presses
                    Charles Glass style lateral raises
                    Machine lateral raises
                    Barbell front raise

Legs (Workout is limited due to lack of equipment at gym or proper equipment)
                    Squats
                    Leg Press
                    Leg Extension
Calves on Leg press machine, or calf raises on smith machine

                      Some strong lifts mate!

Why do Traps with Chest and not with Shoulders or Back?

Wow, lotta exercises going on there, perhaps too much? For example your triceps look like they're getting hit really hard as it is on your chest day alone with all that pressing exercises, ever thought about dropping a couple exercises? Maybe start training your Tri's along with Shoulders etc? and this way giving your body an extra day to rest.

jindlay - thanks for feedback mate - appreciated

i know traps with chest is strange but ive started doing this recently as my shoulders are burning by end of my workout and i want better traps so trying a different approach.

what exericses would you suggest i drop?
