As you get older how has your training changed?

I spend a lot more time stretching and trying to retain flexibility these days (nearly 40), particularly on days when deadlifting etc. This is to prevent injury and every day I spend 5-10 mins stretching. Im still very far from flexible but this has become and integral part of my training.

I do more warm ups and I have gone from training things twice a week to three times a fortnight and now to once a week. The recovery takes longer.

The thing is I train harder and better than I ever have to good result but I have to be more cogniscent of the risk of injury, and recovery.

My training has got harder - more intense and I suppose more difficult as I challenge myself more. I do get more injuries maybe a mixture of things from didn't warm up enough, didn't stretch enough or maybe I was just trying that PB again or I was confusing DOMs with a problem!!!! I am more focused and will not quit! I have spent too long saying "I'm too old for this" Now I love it, focused and am seeing the change!

I warm up much much more, I stretch for at least 15/20 minutes before every workout. I workout less hopefully to aid recovery and ive recently incorporated pilates!

Oasis, do you really think stretching before a wo is beneficial ? I dont even stretch AFTER a wo. I stretch on my non lifting days (which are incidentally cardio days). I believe that stretching before a wo weakens your tendons and makes you more injury prone. Apparently the science now points more towards stretching on days you dont lift.

I have to remind myself that stretching is a good thing to prevent injury.

Its just something I've done mate since I had gyp from rotator cuff last year, follow this up with arthritis in my knees and pelvis its just something I've done, you may have a point though who knows??

I'm now the wrong side of 30. My training is purely cardio based in prep for some tough marathons. I have to stretch every night, calf muscles especially, hams too, even on rest days. I have no idea why, maybe it is an age related thing but I've found that if I don't stretch often then I get injuries and pain whilst running
It's finally arrived....PM Neb for swaps!
