Astra or Focus.... there's only one way to decide... Fight !!! 10 February 2012 04:04 (permalink)
Ok so after looking at nicer stuff like celica's and Golf gti's etc ive narrowed my search for a replacement 2nd car to a Mk1 Focus or a Mk5 Astra. ( slightly more sensible for a 2nd car... lol )

The Focus is a 1.6 Zetec, 04 reg, 3 dr, 70,000 miles etc for £2k
The Astra is a 1.6 Club,  54 reg, 5 dr, 70,000 miles etc for £2k also.  ( both tidy, service history etc.)

Both are the same cost insurance wise and fuel, tax costs etc more or less the same.

Ive had a focus and had no trouble with it so that goes in its favour, but being a Mk1 they do look dated now. The astra being a Mk5 looks a little more 'modern' but its an ugly thing IMO... lol

so, which one is the better buy ?

It is a 2nd car, not my 'nice' car, just to and from work and gym etc etc... relaibility, practicality and lower running costs are the key.

What do we think M/T ?

Unless you need the 5 doors, I'd go for the Focus.  For what it is they are quite nice to drive and have a good rep cost wise.

I dont think there is much to choose between them mate, both the same car really. If it was me i would be looking for a Seat Ibiza at the same kind of money - difference being your getting a bit of cheap german engineered car that IMO would be more reliable and have more longevity.

so neither would be my first option, followed by the one you prefer the colour/look of as my second as they are such similar motors.

Focus every time, purely because I've had 2 Astra's and they were terrible. Preferably I'd go for a Seat in that range.

            Cheers guys,

certainly dont need 5 doors, will only be me in it 95% of the time and i prefer the look of 3 door cars tbf.

Hmmmm seat, not considered one tbh mate. I will have a look to see if there are any local worth a look at. TBH, ive just about had my fill of looking at cars these last couple of weeks... lol
Ok, i know its not a great deal of money but im proper pi55ed off at dealers who advertise these 'beautiful motors' and when you get there for a look at em they are rough sheds.

            Car dealers....

The above 2 are bothe clean and genuine cars so im just about done looking now.

Focus i have had was super reliable and gave me no trouble whatsoever, i had a 6 mth old vectra a couple of years ago and was a pain in the arse tbh...

Would also go for the focus. I have an 8 astra but just don't trust vauxhalls like I would the focus.

Go for the Focus - friends all seem to get rid of the Astras and also say thay are juicier and less reliable than Vauxhalls of old, especially compared to the Focus.  I had a Mk1 and thought it was a great car.

i would get a focus for the simple reason that every astra i have ever been in smells of stuffy upholstery and makes me feel sick!!!!

I've had a Focus for a while now and it's the most reliable car I've ever had.Nothings gone wrong with it whatsoever and it's a nice comfortable drive too.
