BCAA and fasted cardio 18 January 2012 10:59 (permalink)
I've just started doing a bit of fasted cardio in the morning, I do it about 45 mins after waking up ,is it best to take BCAA upon waking or just before i start the cardio ,or will it not make much difference either way ?

I would use it before training. No muscles will fall off by not eating or having BCAA's for 45 min in the morning.

Having used bcaa pre cardio for one show prep and nothing the next i noticed no difference in muscle retention etc.

I would keep bcaa for around workouts

5 grams should be sufficient to give a boost to protein synthesis nicely.

Cardio on empty should be just that tbh.

As long as its steady state - you will be fine.

Cardio on an empty stomach will more likely lead to muscle catabolism. Sure you may get a slight extra fat loss benefit but the risk/reward scenario for most would leave them better off using BCAA's.

Leaving aside muscle catabolism BCAA intake will help with mood and performance so you would likely get a superior workout anyway.

The fact that most AM / Fasted cardio is a brisk walk, I very much doubt any muscle loss will occur, I mean if someone walked there dog every morning for 40 mins then when home eat all there foods, aminos in an around training, then train hard etc

                      IMO no muscle loss

I wouldn't class walking as cardio but yeah if the OP is regarding it as cardio then fair enough he could do without but the day I class walking at whatever pace as cardio is hopefully a few decades off yet.

i do boxing for 40mins and drink a mix 1g hmb,5g glutamine and 1/2 a serving of total protien and then have the other 1/2 of total protien after does well for me in order to keep muscle mass

If it were me I would simply mix the BCAAs in my water bottle which I start supping pre and intra workout.  We can over complicate things at times, and in the real world a few minutes or so difference in BCAA ingestion time won't make a massive difference to your average recreational trainer.

fasted or unfasted, it won't have a difference on fat loss.

I read a published review on the subject that showed food pre training elicited great fat loss than fasted. It was posted in the D&N section last year .
