Been back a while 29 November 2011 21:07 (permalink)
Well I've been a member for a while but never posted. So here we go:- Currently I am on the comeback trail with regards to training (particulalrly the deadlift) as I pulled a hamstring lifting a silly weight (very light!!,sad to say) and last week managed a 265kg deadlift followed by 250kg for 1, 230kg for 3, 220kg for 4 and 210kg for 4.  Today decided to consolidate with heavy weights and a few more reps and this was the result:- after the intial warm up managed 200kg for 4, 230 for 4, 220 for 5, 220 for 5 and 220 for 4. Pre the hamstring I had managed a 287.5kg deadlift (straps) so the aim of the game is to better that. Your advice would be most welcome as I'm learning all the time and as they say knowledge is power. (Incidently I weigh about 125kg). Cheers.

Near 290 is a nice pull. I'd do what you did to get you to there first!

Well Iain it was a case of slowly slowly catchey monkey before if i'm honest. I aimed at 1.25kg a side per week. Not a lot but it worked. If I stagnated I would stop and take a step back and concentrate on reps on a lower weight,i.e stagnation on 250kg go back to 230-220 and then work on reps on these weights. I do get frustarted but I will endevour. And yes I'm natural too. Thanks for your advice Iain. I appreciate it.

Sounds more than fine. See how you get on over next few months and go from there.

Jeepers that's some deadlift. What are your other lifts like? Must have a fairly beastly squat too?

Thanks for the advice Iain. The aim is 300kg and then progress from there. As far as other lifts, on the squat its 260kg and a 185kg unassisted bench (my lift off, my press, my return, under supervision obviously). As for "aids" the only thing I use is straps on the deadlift. (Take into account I'm 6'2" and nearly 20 stone now mind!)

I am considering it Iain. I've been toying with the idea pre the hamstring injury and to be honest that knocked me off my feet for a while (would you believe the hamstring was done on a 120kg leg press warm up, devastated about sums it up). But as things have come together in my life as a whole I'm seriously considering it. Going to carry on as I as you suggested and gradually build up to 235-240-245-250 etc etc and then smash my way through. I am everfaithful and patienece is a virture as they say so need to pray for patience. I think another 4-5 weeks of strong lifting between 230-250 and then I'll go for a p.b again.  Again thanks for the advice.

Well a little update:- Deadlift today, after a few warm up sets, 235kg 4, 225 5,
225 5,225 5,225 5, next step is 240 for at least 4 reps and 230 for a few sets of at least 4 each and then in about 3 weeks time go for a new pb. I did what you said Iain about form and yes it worked, split my feet with the bar and kept it tight to my body and felt a whole lot better (as todays results show). Cheers.

                      Update:- Deadlifts,after a few warm up sets 200 3, 240 4, 230 4,230 4,230 4,230 4,
230 4. Things looking better everyweek. Next week 245 for at least 4 I think, going to keep going with the 4's or 5's and then hit the 280's and 290's for a P.B. and maybe get an assault in on the big 300.

Cheers BigRed. Well given my current situation (long story) the gym is going someway to reducing my anger and if I'm honest I'm so knackered after training that I cant be agitated or angry or pissed off but just need food, bath and bed, sad but true. Training like this (with squats and bench et al) is reducing the anger to a managable level. I know its a form of self harm (Psychology degree comes in handy sometimes) but thats how I process it. The aim of the game is to smash through the 300kg and then take it as far as I can (naturally). This week (tomorrow in fact) its 245 for at least 4 and 235 for at leasr 4/5 sets of 4. Was going to be quite cheeky and try 250 for 3/4 or do you think I would be taking the piss a bit? All the best.

Well update:- to cut a long story short its was utter ****e (head was in the wrong place and missed meals, classic waste of time and energy, very annoyed at myself) I will not bore you with details but abandoned the deadlifts and sulked off to do a bastardised version of bi's tri's and shoulders which surprisingly went well. I will not make the same mistake again. Food is fuel and I'm a fool to think I could avoid this fact. (2.5 degrees and you'd think I'd know better, but there you go).

Cheers 59. Well the task continues. Lets just say Christmas and a week at Centre Parcs didnt do the strength training a power of good, eh? If you know what I mean. Its been a case of catch up this last 10 days but I'm slowly dragging my sorry ass there, kicking and screaming I may add. Update on the Deadlifts:- well after the Christmas debacle it was back to the grindstone and hit it (after warm up sets)  with 200 3 230 4 230 4 230 4 230 4 230 3 (still its 19 reps with 230kg, so happy with that) followed this with a bastardised version of bi's,tri's and shoulders (short of time- on a different day I may add) and then a big day on chest yesterday. Eating is now a priority as food is fuel and its paying dividends. Regards to all.
