Beginner help required! - 18 November 2009 23:27 ( #1 )
Im 22 years old and about 6ft 2. Due to my height i find it hard to put on weight. I have been training for a while now but i really want to get stuck in over the winter. I need to do it properly so im asking for advice.

I try and eat chicken, tuna, pasta and fruit eachday with 3 protein shakes. Is this a good direction?

Basically I am after advice on how to maximise my efforts down the gym.

Thanks

Hi mate.

Most important thing is diet.  Not jsut what you eat, but if you are batling putting wieght on, then how much you eat.

The beginner articles have some good advice and routines

As INLT said have a read of the articles over the site, some really good stuff, but basically to be putting on weight its a case of consuming more calories than you expend, if youre not growing in size then to put it simply then you need to be eating more (obviously good calores, protein, healthy fats, complex carbs, veg etc etc)

3 shakes a day is a lot in my opinion.  You'd be better off dropping a shake or two & replacing with 'normal' food - most shake formulas aren't that calorific so won't help you add weight.

If you're having trouble putting on weight I'd suggest adding more good carbs like brown rice & oats, plus lots of healthy fats like olive oil & avocados.

Nutrition is only part of the equation, the other 2 main things being rest/recovery & training.  If I was looking to add bulk I'd eat like a crazy bastard & train a 3 day split push/pull/legs using something like 5X5.

I would advice you to look at the more energy dense and convenient foods for example snacking through the day on things like almonds and walnuts will help push up calorie intake in an convenient way.
