Bench press AFTER other chest exercises? 02 February 2012 12:37 (permalink)
So, many people seem to recommend doing the heavy compound exercise that is the bench press, BEFORE other chest exercises. Many also probably like to do this for 'ego' reasons, as the bench press is an exercise we like to use as much weight as possible for, and hence doing it at the beginning of the workout leaves us more fresh while doing it, and hence able to get as good a number as possible, for the lift.

However, I've been doing this, and have found that somehow my pecs don't feel too pumped, after doing it, and that my triceps are letting me down first, limiting the stimulation my pecs get. I have read that doing other exercises first may be good, as the pecs are by far the strongest of the muscle groups used in the exercise, so isolating them first ('pre-fatiguing' strategy) may lead to them and the triceps/shoulders failing more at the same time.

Any thoughts on this?

Try it out? Pre-exhaust your chest with machine flyes, cable flyes or standard db flyes.

yeh Shae's right - try pre-exhausting your chest with a few sets of flyes or as I do a set of flyes supersets with press & slow the press right down to engage your pecs more.

might have to leave your ego at the door tho as you'll not be able to push your usual weight

For me, slow controlled reps have been the best decision I've made when working my chest... Even if it's just 10-15kg lower than your usual lifting weight, but going down slow and controlled and not locking out so your chest is engaged and under tension throughout the movement.

          Guys, Sorry to hijack this thread but I've been training solid now for the past 3months doing the PUSH/PULL/LEGS routine doing the compound excersises at 5x5 and my chest/bench is really lagging!! I know it's early days but whilst my strength and physical gains have been good in most other departments my chest is very poor!! I'm struggling to complete 5x5 with 70kg! Was just wondering if perhaps on my PUSH day doing this;

DB Flies (Flat or Incline?)  3 x 30
          DB Incline Press 3 x 10-12
          Military Press 5x5
          Weighted dips 4x6
          Skull Crushers 3x12
          Overhand pull ups to failure

The Remaining PULL/Legs will still be very much 5x5.

Any thoughts on whether this is worth a bash or can be adjusted further?

3x30 flyes seems a lot mate - warm up with light weights then hit it with control & mix it up between incline & flat flyes

I also mix my routine up every few weeks - lately i've started with incline bench then cable flyes then db bench

rest of the routine looks ok

try doing a few sit ups before benching to engage your core in the press

Yea 3x30 flies does seem ALOT but some guy called GM on this forum posted it as a pre-exhaust workout before hitting the chest on another "chest Thread"...

So would you suggest doing 3x chest exercises on my push day? What reps 3x10? Also sit ups is a new one I've heard before chest... How many sit ups are we talking?? Lol sorry for the questions, just really keen to get my chest upto scratch with the rest of my lifts...

3x30's fine for a warm up and to pre-exhaust, I sometimes do 5x20 at the end of my chest workout... Gets the blood flowing for sure

Benching 70kg x 5 x 5 isn't particularly weak for someone lifting for 3 months, how much did you except to be benching after that time? What are your other lifts?

                    My other lifts are:
Squat 125kg 5x5 completed on Friday
Deadlift 147.5kg 5x5 completed last Wednesday (last 2reps were ugly if I'm honest lol)
Standing Military Press BB 47.5Kg 5x5

I just assumed my bench would be nearer the 80-85Kg for 5x5 seen as I started benching on 57.5kg 5x5 three months ago....??

You're certainly stronger in your legs and back compared to your chest and shoulders...

I can't squat or deadlift what you can but I can do 5x5 on 90kg on the bench

I have probably the weirdest shape known to man!! Lol!! I have short legs, although my thighs and arse are quite chunky, my calfs are quite long and skinny... my back and mid section is quite thick but my arms are looooong n skinny and my shoulders aren't that wide... My chest doesn't have shape at all, if anything, I'd say there's bugger all in the middle of my chest, it sort of grows out the bottom and to the sides..?? I hate my body badly... Hence the new addiction gym to try and even it all out lol!!

Agree on the slow controlled reps vs heavy weight crap form.
2 seconds up 4 down for me works well and even sometimes 4 secs up 4 down.
on the 6th rep the burn is insane!!!
