This thread brings back hot hatch memories. When I has a chavvy teenager I was lucky enough to own... XR2, XR2i, XR3i, Escort RS Turbo, 205 GTI, Fiesta RS Turbo, R5 GTT, AX GT, Swift GTI, MK1 MR2, Lancer EVO 1, STI V2, Mitsi 3000GT. (jap stuff in early 20s) I thought I was the bollox with my mods and loud bass, when infact I was just a nob and someone needed to give me a good kicking. Fun at the time but what a prick!!! Sorry, this obviously does not answer your Q. For me best hot hatch must come from the 80s / 90s.

Lol yep I had a Fiesta RS turbo, which I had modded in Essex - Rolling road over 200bhp cost me a fortune and by 40k miles it was leaking oil all over the place but great fun. I agree the time for hot hatches was late 80's early 90's although high insurance killed them off pretty much by mid 90's - mine went from 800 to over 3k then which is when I said good bye to em lol. The old Renault 5 turbo although very poor construction was a little beast too.

Dav In 2002 a caterham held the record (including all supercars at the time) andagainst a race tuned R1 around a track. The caterham will be able to put its power down much more easily than a bike anyway so claims of 0-60 times on a bike are often not attainable, chuck in some bends and the caterham has no equals. There are modded caterhams which run 0-60 faster than the 2.8 secs of the R500 for example. Also think how low to the ground you are in a caterham and all that sliding. I've been on the back of a powerful bike with a crappy driver which was scary, not been in a caterham but was in a modded panther running over 300bhp very low to the ground like Caterham and light and it was savage, much much more exhilerating than the bike. Fair play to you feller, still reckon I could beat any car on my old blade in mod to heavy traffic, I used to filter like a loon on motorways, done Wisbech to Hunstanton in 17 mins on a blade. Yeah 0-60 is limited on a bike do to wheeling but what about 60-150?? different story and stopping power, but yeah you are right in a way as the cars you are talking about are so light and yes have 4 points of contact with the rd. But I can buy a bike for 2-3k that can out perform a 911 turbo and it wheelies and leans over which is pretty exhilarating

My dad had a c reg 325 bmw and a Renault 5 turbo when I was like 12-13 (I think) That 5 man could squeal the front tyres in third (was chipped) Pissed all over the bmw

Lol yes very poor build (Renualt) but as rapid as any of the "hot hatches" today, I think although it was supposed 0-60 in 8 secs it was actually nearer to 7 and as you say chipped it was very rapid, don't see any around now so they've probably either all been written off or rotted away.

If I was going to buy a cheap hot hatch I would get a old like 02 (when they were small and weighed less to nothing) clio club sport. The new clio has gotten all fat
