Best equipment to buy for around £200 18 December 2011 00:30 (permalink)
Hi

I'm looking to do some weight training at home. I have about £200 to spend initially on some weights and a bench, what would you recommend?

Thanks!

Spend it on long dumbbells with slim style discs and use them on the floor (matt) Check out the scoobyworkshop site for home work outs on a budget

in argos they had good bench (from york i think) few years back - now im sure that they have even more stuff- and their prices are acceptable - i paid around 100£ for my bench and i still use it sometimes

I wouldn't bother with the Argos type stuff , you will soon outgrow it if your training regularly , I would buy a oly bar and a decent range of plates - second hand would be best as gym stuff is always getting sold . Check out eBay, loot etc

if you can get it second hand would be great - on ebay try to find local pick up - otherwise postage charges will kill you

            Olympic barbell set.

Get a set of squat stands or a rack when more funds become available.

Thanks for the links, these squat stands look interesting - do you know if they can be adjusted low enough for bench pressing?

I definitely wouldn't skimp on the bench. I've recently bought the York 13 in 1 bench and find it excellent, this purchase alone has improved the capabilities of my "home gym". It can be configured flat, incline, decline, and for back extensions and preacher curls.

I bought it from Amazon for about £100, worth every penny.

Yep you can lower them for benching.

7' bar and plates to start with, plates are pricey but you'll always use them especially 20kg plates - x2 of these will probably cost you £60 ish alone..

you can do so much with just that..

And a pull-up bar that fixes to a wall too - don't cost too much..

Then a rack or squat stands when you can afford it..

Glad to hear it - because I ordered them the other day, they have arrived and are waiting to be assembled! A pretty good price, about £84 including delivery with the 10% winter discount applied.
