Beta Blockers for Anxiety 30 January 2012 13:52 (permalink)
Firstly are these only available through the Docs?

Have any of you tried them who have anxiety problems?

I'm thinking of giving them a whirl due to my anxiety getting a little cocky of late!

Is it something you have found works as and when you take them or do they need to be built up in your system?

Was on these a few years  back (prescribed by doc) just after my marrige went tits up and they really helped.

They start working right away and I was able to sleep properly and get my appetite back. They had the side effect of making me sweat a lot though
Come to think of it, i might check my chicks knicknacks when she comes home because my sex life has went massively down hill years ago

I tried Inderol before an interview and found it great.

It seems to get great reviews for taking away the physical symptoms during periods of high anxiety. Does it help with the mental and emotional side at all?

For me it helped enormously, I was very relaxed being interview and hence when questions were thrown at me I didn't panic and took them in my stride, no sure how I'd of performed had I not tried inderol.

I found they worked great, they dont help with mental worry as such. I just felt really on edge very high resting pulse, heart flutters etc. On them for a month and after the first day I calmed right down and touch wood dont suffer anymore unless a heavy reccy session

I suffered from anxiety and panic attacks during my final year at uni and was prescribed propanolol which helped greatly. I've also used them before playing onstage with my band and before doing any kind of public speaking which I find very difficult.

I don't have general anxiety day to day, for me its more of a performance/social things I get overly anxious over.
I have used propranolol in the past for things such as public speaking, job interviews, first dates, tests/exams etc with great success.
As already said it will not take away the mental anxiety but it will greatly reduce the outward signs of anxiety or nervousness, such as fast heart beat, sweating, shaking, racing thoughts or mental blocks I believe it works by blocking adrenaline from being dumped into the blood stream so you can appear calm and collected despite feeling anxious.
Musicians often use them for performances infront of large audiences, they are a banned substance for Olympics and some other organisations and surgeons have even used them for preventing hand tremor during surgery.
                      They are great.

For the mental symptoms diazepam will help, but thats opens up a whole new can of worms- dependency and rebound anxiety is a possibility...

Thanks for the input lads, very helpful.

How do you guys get a hold of this stuff, do you just go to your GP and tell him your strugling with anxiety? Doesn't he then marry that prescription with therapy?

In theory s/he should, but in practice most GP surgeries have looong waiting times for access to therapy except in the most severe cases (and sometimes even then) and some GPs still seem to have a rather poor understanding of what therapy involves and its potential benefits re: learning to deal with anxiety with no/fewer drugs.

GPs tend to be extremely over-worked and busy, and writing a prescription (if it helps with the symptoms) is a nice, quick, and easily quantifiable solution..

If you actaully WANT therapy then push ery hard for it, or consider going privately - should be able to find a decent counsellor/CBT therapist for around £40/hour or less, and you should get a feel within a few sessions whether its going to help or not
