Big arms & shoulders stopping chest development??
29 January 2012 23:24
( permalink)
been tranning for years now and happy with my overall progress, but my chest ALWAYS seem to be the only part lagging behind. I have always had big arms and shoulders and a chap in the gym thought my be they are hindering my chest development by taking more of the stress during chest excersizes. Is this possible? if it is what is the best way to pre-exhauset my chest while working it out?

do you chest first? what is your routine, are you doing shoulders/arms on the same day as chest? if you want to pre-exh, you could do some flies at low weight high rep

I have the same issue - tris & delts take most of the load in most pressing movements leaving me with a pretty weak looking chest by comparison. I've recently found DB pressing escapes this a fair amount (don't bother extending fully), and as above, flies. My current chest/tris/shoulders routine goes like this: DB press DB flies Standing military press Cable jungle Tri push down Tri overhead press Incline DB flies Seems to be working do far, only time will tell!!

Ye i experemented with pre-exhusting with flys years ago, but was still learning. i cant really do db Press just now as i had shoulder surgery a year ago and a) my snatch to get the heavy dbs into the vertical start position was causing me some pain and b) my stabalizer muscules still are not up to streangth. so will work on pre-exahusting with flys on barbell press. but my im is to get backto using db press. did my first pre-exhaust tonight and although couldn't lift as much on the barbell its the best pump ive had in my chest for ages so hopefully i feel it tomorrow.

Agree with whats already been said above. I dont use a barbell at all know. All my pressing is done with dumbells. Bench, Shoulder Press, oh and weighted Dips. I did see when using a barbell my chest developed less, so i havent bothered going back to it.

Yes your tri's and delts probably are. Pre-exhaust your chest. Do maybe 3 sets of db flys for 30-35 reps then go on to db press etc..

GM are you meaning do the 3 sets of flys first then straight onto barbell or 1 set of fly then 1 set of barbell 3 times?

i had same issue so now dont do arms and odd bit of shoulders well once a week after chest i just do 3 quick sets of arms to keep it as is whereas the guy next to me doing 100 sets trying to get my arms lol so moral, drop arms and do chest to failure everytime, then just throw in the odd arms to keep tight
