Body type? 18 February 2010 22:31 (permalink)
I'm an ectomorph (I think..?) and I've heard it's hard to build muscle if you're that body type.  And being the wrong side of ffff .. can't bring myself to say it !!

What's your body type ?  Was it easy to gain muscle or not ? Do endomorphs get bigger easier ?  Not sure why I'm asking this, just interested to know how other over 40's have got on and if body type is a factor or not.  Am really hoping it isn't !!

    Try this calculator
    http://www.dietandfitnesstoday.com/bodyFrame.php

There are also calculators to determine what your muscle size could be after training
    http://www.trulyhuge.com/fitnesscalculators.htm

They are supposed to be OK for women. I've found them quite good but then I'm a man.

I think I'm an endomorph?  the fat one! and regretfully I'm also short...lol....since I started weight training I have found the muscle coming on fairly quickly and the fat coming off not so quickly darn it!...but I'm working on that one...I was advised to work on the hips/thighs and stomach and that is what I am doing...well..trying to.....but....when I first dropped the mahoosive amount of weight I was certainly a pair shape person and now I am an hour glass...38/29/38....but I'm hoping the waist and the hips will motor down sooner rather than later....i think if you work hard enough it is possible to change...but I don't think you can change your body type..that's a genetic thing isn't it?...you just become a better version of what you are....(errrrm...I read that!...I'm no expert)....not sure if that's any help at all!!!...but I'm off to look at the link that Al gave you...looks interesting....

I think I am an ectomorph, thin/medium frame with a pot belly, well used to have, currently a 34" waist and aiming for 32" by spring summer.

AI, thanks for the links, the second one gives me something to aim for :)
46" chest, 16" biceps with a 32" waist would be soooo nice lol

I believe an ectomorph's workout should be shorter and harder if you want to gain muscle. You can certainly build lost of muscle if you train and eat properly. If you find you are training correctly and hard enough and not putting weight on, it can only be your diet letting you down.

I'm still putting muscle on now and I wouldn't say slowly either and I'm 46 next year.. Completely natural, only protein drinks. Currently weighing 16 1/2 stone. When I was 16 years old I was ten and a half stone.

Most people are a blend of two.

I am Meso/Endo. I am tall and broad, I put on muscle ok but also hold a lot of fat easily, hence it is easy for me to be big and strong but not so easy for me to be big, strong and lean.

            Im am currently 19st, 6'2", I have a 37" waist and a 51" chest.

Simply put I look big and strong, and I clearly lift but could do with losing 10KG !

My wife is an Ecto so Im hoping we will produce lean yet strong offspring !

alas, very few of us are gifted with perfect genetics.
              hey ho, keep on lifting.

                ectomorph

I do train hard, but my routines typically last 60-90mins, too long I think. If I up the cals beyond 2500 it goes straight to the gut :( but then according to the doc got a low test count, just above being able to prescribe for, so that may have something to with it.
I will re-visit my routine in a couple of weeks and trim it to see if it helps.
