I always thought Newport was tame, didn't think there was much violence, only a heroin problem.  I grew up in a council estate in Llanelli though and went out in Swansea etc which were said to be a lot worse.  In truth, they're all just different shades of the same sh*t.
Went to uni in Cardiff though so came across a lot of the corrupt meat heads who ran the doors along St. Mary street etc.  If the licensing put all of those particular idiots out of work then I'm glad.  I remember chatting to a copper about one bouncer and he said most of them were known to the Police.  So you see, they were adding to the problem of law enforcement and not making things easier.
From drug possession to carrying firearms and everything in between, there's a reason why things had to change.  I'm not saying the current solution is ideal, but in my weary eyes it's heading in the right direction.  

Think of them as an extension of the Police, which use training and numbers rather than size to be effective when restraining someone.  It would be strange if all coppers were massive, immoveable objects.

what makes you think the sia stopped those things you mentioned it didnt, town attracts certain charactors will never change.
 
If the police (you) actually were an an extention of peace and law and worked with doormen then it wd all go a lot smoother.  most cops were waiting to pounce on doormen given the opportunity.  they ve been given a task let them do it

I really don't know whether the current actions have improved the situation as I don't know/see the current crop of door staff but anything that stops certain people from working who had a criminal record or improves the vetting is definately a good thing. 
 
In the 80's and early 90's where I'm from drug dealing/crime and big bad bully boy doorman went hand in hand. All the door staff I was aware of at all of the main venues through out a large areas were involved in intimidation and/or drugs in some way.  I was offered work at various times but didn't have the character and it also appauled me with regards to what went on.

i agree with you ,,  you dont need lunatics on the door just purely to fight and intimidate.  facts are today if you are not polite, respectful and curteous you wont keep a job long doing anything.  no different with door work.  big chains and cooperations own most bars and clubs and they wont be intimidated by the local hardman.  however you , the basics dictate you must hve some back up or kids will walk all over you,,,  hence th current situation where most cities are no go areas at night for normal folk

Yup, my missus was gobsmacked when he said that he pulls all the best looking birds (or whatever he said) as she thought he was like shrek on a bad day!

These guys don't seem as professional as the bouncers on a very similar program just a couple of years back. I've heard all of them have since been sacked?
