I know its only TV, but on all the reality shows I've seen, the database they use to flag up non-insured drivers on the ANPR is often out of date or wrong. So I am surprised they didn't ask you to contact your insurer and prove cover first before issuing the penalty. Unless you admitted being uninsured to them?

If this is your policy and you where insured for any car wether it was loaned of your Dad or not I am pretty sure your covered 3rd party either way if you have the owners permission , you need to ask the insurance company why they cancelled your policy based on what you have said above?

Also look in your insurance docs and see if it was a 12month policy that expired after the date you where caught , does seem very harsh.

only usually covers cars not owned by and not registered to the policy holder.  and they also need to be otherwise insured, as it only covers the driver to drive not the actual vehicle.

OP- if you had the conversation with the insurance company then it WILL be recorded, and if you put in a complaint the team handling it will listen to the conversation, and find in your favour if their representative told you cover had reverted back to the original car.  I had something similar with an insurance company many years ago

didnt realise that , but just so we are clear , you are saying that its because it was his own car and not someone else that he wasnt covered by his own insurance ?

i can see direct line do this but cant think of a reason why , why on earth would it be ok to drive someone elses car but not your own if you have valid insurance ?

OP i would still get the phonecall pulled and have a listen , just because they didnt do the neccessary papaerwork doesnt mean they didnt leave you to believe that you wherent covered , they canclled mine once even though i got the automatic continuing of insurance letter at the end of the year where it states if you do nothing we will automatically renew , but because i rang the same company asking for a quote (tesco) they cancelled the policy , no letter to inform me i just assumed i was covered .

phone the insurance mate and argue your case or threaten legal action, the insurances are bast*rds, my insurer tried cancelling my insurance because they said I never provided them with licence or ncb, but the broker has it on file so they tried to accuse me, had it sorted quick time, all good now

Presumably because you could insure yourself on somebodys KA then drive your sports car round?

Insurance companies are terrible, the smallprint when insuring motorbikes makes it pretty clear unless its chained up using 15 locks in a secure garage guarded by dragons, if your bike is stolen they wont be paying out.

^^^they paid out for my bike when it was stolen - then loaded a huge chunk on every policy Ive taken out since (on the grounds that Ive made a claim), including my car insurance (how come my 30 years of No Claims Bonus on the car doesnt carry over to my bike insurance, but my ONE insurance claim for a bike theft DOES carry over to my car insurance??), meaning that over the last four years they've basically reclaimed the money they paid out for the bike and financially I might as well have just written it off and not claimed on the insurance.

@the OP - IIRC they've got you over a barrel for the 'driving without insurance' anyway. Unless they've made any recent changes, the law always used to say that it was the drivers responsibility to make sure they're insured before driving any vehicle - so mistakes or cock-ups by the insurance company isnt a valid defence, the court can just say that it was up to you to check whether there had been a mistake before putting the keys in the ignition.
