Chin ups - Back day or biceps day?
19 March 2010 14:43
( permalink)
Hi guys, When do you do chin ups? Back or bis day? And secondly why? I currently do them on bis day and do wide grip pull ups on shoulders day. If I've missed anything, just have a look at my journal. Thanks in advance

chins are a back exercise which works the bicep hard. I do bac and bis together so not a worry for me.

Close grip underhand when doing bi's. Normal and semi-wide grip on back day. Because they are a great mass building exercise: which cross overwell to other pulling exercises and physical sports.

Cheers guys bascially then you are trianing your back twice a week. nothing wrong with that. but chin ups are a compound back exercise. I would call that day back and bis unless only do one set and multiple sets of biceps

stephen77 - I do 3 sets mate 10, 8 and 6 The thing is I do back and tris and chest and bis so I don't want to change my routine just because of the chin ups.

Zeddy stephen77 - I do 3 sets mate 10, 8 and 6 The thing is I do back and tris and chest and bis so I don't want to change my routine just because of the chin ups. Do them on back day IMO. They're a lat exercise that just happens to hit your biceps hard, just like benching hits your triceps hard, and you wouldn't do benching on tricep day rather than chest day.* *(Some people might argue that close grip chin ups is the equivalent of Close Grip Bench Press and therefore this makes it primarily an arm movement, but it's not really the same thing. With CGBP you're taking your chest out of the equation completely, but with narrow grip chin ups your back is still the main muscle that gets used - think about it, are you able to curl your bodyweight? I'm guessing not, your biceps aren't strong enough to shift that much weight, so clearly your back will be the primary mover for bodyweight chins!. They just target the lats slightly less and the biceps slightly more than wide grip.)

yeah i would agree with CK, its 100% a back excercise with secondaries being biceps and a few other muscles.

primary joint action is shoulder extension (from overhead), therefore agonist are lats. Its a back movement regardless of wrist supination. Dorian used a supinated wrist on bb bent rows and narrow grip pulldowns and his lats were imo best ever. sel
