Claiming back PPI? 07 February 2012 16:52 (permalink)
Probably a long shot but I'm trying to get some money back from a loan I had a long time ago.  I've managed to get a copy of my credit agreement from the company in question but I have no idea how much I'd be likely to get.  Has anybody here got any experience with this type of thing?

We're doing it through Belmont Thornton, had one pay out and waiting on one more. They do all the donkey work and take 25%. On the Martin Lewis site he's got all the stuff to do it yourself and save yourself any costs to a broker.

Yeah, I'm doing it all myself, the thought of giving someone 25% for just sending out a few template letters is out of the question.  I'm pretty much there but I just wanted to know how to calculate how much I should expect back.

        Ive done this with success.
Wrote directly to the bank using a template from MSE.

Sent the letter iirc late Nov, and received funds back 2nd week Jan.

Did they give you the full amount or did they try and haggle you?  Did you also ask for interest on top of the payment?

How is the interest calculated guys?
            Is it 8% annually compounding?

I have a nice sum excluding interest to get back.

            Cheers.

Full amount plus annual 8%. I did not need to haggle or request for the additional interest.

Was hassle free and received no challenge. Then again, this may depend on the amount youve borrowed. I took out a few K through a graduate loan.

I took the loan out in 2003 but didn't pay it off until 2007.  You don't think the start date will be an issue do you?

                    Not at all.
And especially not if you have the paperwork to hand - your paperwork is your proof. These things aren't time-barred.

Mine goes back to 2002 - when I was sold mortgage protection while self-employed.
They told me in 2005, when renewing the mortgage, that the PPI didn't cover me.
The interest has mounted up sufficiently now to get it back....

Does it effect your credit rating, claiming it back. I always get the companies ringing me up, saying I've should claim, but was once told it effects, your credit rating, so have not bothered.

Am I the only person never to have taken out PPI on any loan I've ever had? See loads of threads about claiming it back but didn't realise so many people used it.

                            No. Never had it.

Used to work in the industry so was fully aware how much of a con moneyspinner it was for the banks. In the 80's I joined as a banker. 15 years on, I left as a disillusioned, reluctant salesman.

The only experience of it that I have is about 10 text messages a day and the prospect of having to change my number because I am getting houdned so much!

Just an update in case anyone is interested.  I got an offer today from the HFC for the full amount plus interest.  The total is just shy of £3200.  I can't sum up in words how chuffed I am.  I think this is the first bit of financial fortune i've had in my entire life and as silly as it may sound to some of you that figure for me feels like a life changing amount.  It'll see me almost debt free.  For the first time since I can remember I can actually see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I'm wondering if I can make a claim against Lloyds now for unfair bank charges dating from 2002 to 2006.  Anyone know if I've got a case on that one or has that ship sailed?

the bank charges case was thrown out. the only way you can claim is if you are and can prove you're in hardship
