Clean Bulk - is this too much wholegrain bread? 13 January 2012 20:21 (permalink)
Hey guys,

I'm 29 years old, 19 stone, 6"4, rugby player and my BF is prob at the moment about 20%.

Been training a while but had quite a break with a shoulder injury and then the inevitable surgery and back in trying to start off with a clean bulk to kick start and put some mass back on for the next 6 months.

Now my diet is going to look like below and I'm just worried that maybe the 4 slices of bread may be too much, although does being multigrain make it ok?

ok so here's the diet:

6.40 wake up - protein shake
8.00 office - 3 scrambled eggs on 2 whole grain toast
10.30 - whey in water  and bannana
11.30 - Enrage Pre workout shake
12.00 - Gym
1.30 PWO Afterglow shake
2.00 - chicken breast and sweet potato/rice and veg and portion of fruit
4.30pm-   tuna and cucumber sarnie
7.00 -Home
EITHER
7,00 pre workout enrage shake
7.30 gym
8.30 PWO Shake 9pm dinner - steak, veg and baked potatoe OR grilled salmon, steamed spinach and baked potatoe OR large lamb shish kebab OR chicken stir fry
 OR
8pm dinner - steak, veg and baked potatoe OR grilled salmon, steamed spinach and baked potatoe OR large lamb shish kebab OR chicken stir fry

The dinner arrangements will depend on whether I go gym at lunch or go gym after work.

So what's everyone's views on a clean bulk and is there too much bread in there?

Thanks

    The bread is fine mate.

The 8am and 10.30 timings. Could you make this one meal at around 8.30 or 9?

What do you eat before bed?
You need to up the fats too

    Just my 2 pence worth

I agree about the timings and upping your good fats - more oily fish, raw nuts e.g. walnuts for omega 3.

I've seen best results on bulk ups when my male clients eat root veges over bread - sweet potatoes, beetroot, corn - it's not really a clean bulk in my opinion if you're having processed food like bread. I know it's good for convenience, but even brown rice would be better as less preservatives / crap.

If you're wanting to go clean, stick to 1 ingredient carbs.

      You need more veges too.

Could you swap your morning toast with grilled mushrooms, tomato, spinach? Plus a piece of fruit or some berries?

3 shakes a day IMO is quite a bit, shakes are great post workout but the others are really only necessary if you can't do real food, but I know life can get crazy...

I just personally don't recommend my clients rely on shakes if they can eat e.g eggy porridge / meat/nuts/fruit instead.

If you want a change for carbs, pulses are good as contain protein as well as carb and no gluten.

Deff more fats - go 5 eggs as apposed 3 in the morning.

Add some nuts as part of your lunch etc - salmon, mackerel, olives, EVOO, flaxseed oil, natural peanut butter all good choices

Are you bulking for rugby? What poisition do you play? If you're 20% and 19stone you shouldn't be bulking in my view, the days of the fat f*** forward are long gone, I bet you would be a better player at 18.5stone...
