Cod Liver Oil - Good composition?
27 October 2009 00:26
( permalink)
Hey, first post here! I'm currently trying to trim up a bit, nothing major but running and cleaning up my diet to lose a bit of fat! I've been reading in a few places that a good amount of EPA will kick-start the fat burning process. I've seen a few high strength fish oil capsules on my-protein etc, but they're not cheap! I've found that tesco cod liver oil (300ml for £2.50 i think) has the following composition per 10ml: Vit A - 800 micro grams Vit D - 5 micro grams Vit E - 10mg DHA - 1104mg EPA - 828mg I was going to take 30ml a day, for about 2.5g of EPA My main question is, would this be effective? Does the cheapness of the product matter at all? And will i be overdosing in anything? I was going to take in the morning and before bed in my shake too - would that be a good time? I know it's gonna taste bloody awful! I'm a bit new to the diet side of things, any help would be really useful! Theo

If you've been reading stuff by Poliquin, it's not backed up by science. You don't need to take that much EPA. ~1.6g/day will suffice. It's interesting that there's more DHA (good for the brain) than EPA (good for the heart) in that stuff. As EPA & DHA go rancid quite quickly, keep the bottle in the fridge after opening. The Vit D content (5ug=200iu/10mL) is low. Most people need ~5,000iu/day (half the amount produced by sun exposure) for optimal health. 360 days supply of 5,000iu Vitamin D3 gelcaps for only $14.98 (~£9.31) + $4 (~£2.66) P&P For more info' on Vit D, see my Blog (link in signature).

No, taking cod liver oil will not start to make you lose fat. Make sure that your calories in are lower than your out.

Thanks for the help fellas, really appreciate the advice! I'll definitely be keeping it in the fridge from now on, it's rancid enough as it is....! HamiltonsFitness - I got the thing about EPA from Matt Lovell's Fat Loss Program - http://www.fourweekfatloss.com/info.html I'm sure you're busy, but do you rate what he's saying on here at all? Or is there a better article that could help me out? I'm not looking to be ripped to the bone, but being able to see my abs would be a real novelty! Thanks a lot

The info' in that link is like the Curate's Egg. It's good...in parts. Long-chain omega-3 fats don't increase your metabolic rate significantly, but they are good for your health as long as they aren't rancid (bitter-tasting). As Stu says, weight/fat loss is all about eating fewer Calories than you burn. However, if you have a lot of belly fat and/or get very sleepy after meals, you may be somewhat insulin-resistant, in which case you would be better off (in terms of appetite control) lowering your intake of sugary & starchy carbs rather than going on the standard high-carb, low-fat diet that Stu usually recommends.

Losing weight is quite simple in overview. You have to eat less calories than you use. Pretty much every product that we are told will help you lose weight won't have any noticeable effect, so forget all of them and concentrate on your food and cardio. I tried to look at Mr Lovell's website, but it was terminally annoying, so I had to shut him up.

I am only going to add - current food safety advice is to choose fish body oil not liver oil to avoid any potential acumulation of toxic products being passed on to the consumer. personally the best place to start with fat loss is the in/out equation
