Crazy thing I saw in the gym tonight...... - 05 November 2009 21:05 ( #1 )
I was finishing my workout and looked over to the squat rack to see a guy doing what looked like a half squat and good morning crossed together, fully bending his spine forwards as he did so He was using about 80k and rounding his back forward as far as he could go.

Anyone else seen this kind of madness in the gym?

If referring to my avatar, just a couple of seconds before, I was as pasty as usual.

Where do you train? Would you ever consider pointing out bad form to someone or would you just leave them be?

College gym mate. As a rule I generally never suggest that people alter their form, but in this case I was very tempted.

I always see some strange exercises but tend to just leave them be, people may take it completely in the wrong way if you have a word.

I'd feel obliged to say something for two reasons.

1. I'm a senior member of staff at a gym and would feel the need to ask why he was doing such an awkward exercise and what he was trying to work.  I wouldn't just say thats wrong, because i duno what he's doing it for!

2. Having suffered a major back injury myself even if i wasnt a PT or in the industry i would feel the need to ask why he was doing it that way?

Anybody else in the industry feel the same?

Yeah these people are very annoying, i find that if you approach them to help them they actually get quite funny about it. one guy i ended up getting in to a heated argument and just told him to f?ck off.

I don't try and help anymore.

He was with his mate both about 40 one well built, him not about 10 stone he was on chest press pushing 80k and each move springing his back and twisting it, i told him he needs to put the weight down as he's not as strong as his bud. He went bright read and said yes yes i am as strong.

I just said look im only saying this for the safety of your back you could hurt yourself and damage your back, he said what do you know anyway in an annoying way so i replied "clearly a lot more than you as im not 10 stone" and he then started waffling so i just walked away as you get banned from my gym if you get in a fight.

Never again will i help unless someone asks.

The other day there was a guy doing dodgy and lop-sided "squats" (less than a quarter of the way down) with a weight that was way too heavy for him.

Right or wrong, everybody has their own idea of the "right" way to train. I receive quite a lot of criticism while training (nearly always from "lesser" lifters than me), but I'm 100% confident that what I'm doing is right (for me)!!

probably the fact you told him he's not as strong as his mate which put him on the defensive

Thats one thing that does annoy me in the gym is people squatting about 1/4 deph. The other day this guy was chatting to a PT about what a great/tough excercise squats are, then proceeded to knock out around 20 reps, barely moving a few inches.

Really have to bite my tongue and not mention for them to try going to parallel

Iremember reading an article about a BB who rolled his back to strengthen his Multifidus, though id guess he was using quite a light weight.

Only person I have ever heard who does this actually
