Did Arnold Overtrain?

I have to say at this point I am really confused on Overtraining and the truth about the best correct body building methods. Thus far (I have been at it only a few weeks) I have just doing a set or two to warm up and then I do 8 reps to failure for any particular muscle group. I have been really surprised and happy with the results, my muscles are growing great. However I was reading "The education of a bodybuilder" and Arnold says he worked out for a few hours twice a day. Wasn't he overtraining? I mean I have read so many BodyBuilding books that say training that much is just a waste of time. Considering he was 19 with 20 inch biceps I wonder if they are wrong...

So... What is the best method? 45 minutes of going all out 3 or 4 times a week or 3+ hours a day 6 days a week!?

So Confused.. .THanks

Definately the former suggestion. If you doubt it, try both techniques and see which is more sucessful. I would imagine there is some degree of exageration involved here (3hour+), he was also using steroids and a genetic freak.

Arnie had great genetics for bodybuilding,he built most of his size while still in his teens, the training he did obviously worked for him but for the average trainer it would be overkill.

Stick to 45 minutes of going all out 3 or 4 times a week on the big compound movements.

    Did Arnold overtrain? No.

Would 99% of people overtrain if they followed his program? Yes.

This is spot on. Lets remember he was a proffesional athelete at the top of his game. He wouldn't have started out training with such punishing routines. The bottom line is your Joe average couldn't even do half the ammount of work Arnie did, but that is why he was the greates bodybuilder in the world.

I'm not sure but that may be an incorrect statement because arnold said that from the very beginning at 15 years old he went all out. He built a gym in his house and worked out 6 days a week. Got me...

There are different ways of training. I could train 6 days a week if I wanted to but I would have to make sure I have a suitable workout for it, as i'm sure Arnie did. I wouldn't beable to do my current routine 6 days a week or I would overtrain then. I totaly understand what you are saying. But we have to remember he was a gifted athelete and geneticly gifted, this is what enabled him to have the ability to train the way he did.

That's exactly it in a nutshell.

Advantages Arnold has over most of us:
    1) Astonishingly good genetics for bodybuilding
    2) Drugs
    3) (when Weider took him on) Plenty of time to lift weights and do little else

    What about Dorian Yates?

He only did 1 set to failure and bearly worked out more than 45 minutes a session.

He is still considered one of the greatest and had awesome genetics.

If it bleeds, we can kill it. ( Predator, Arnold Schwarzenegger )

    What about him?

Yates is quite a rarity in the pro bodybuilding world. He certainly did a lot less than most- although the "1 set to failure" thing is sometimes exaggerated, because he'd often do 4 or 5 different exercises for a single bodypart, and incorporate a couple of reasonably heavy "warm ups" before his failure set too. Still, a world away from Schwarzenegger's whole days in the gym.

Did Arnold overtrain? No - but I think he would have benefitted from less volume. D-bol, genetics, and immense drive and focus all plays apart.

Would 99% of people overtrain if they followed his program? Yes - quickly!

No disrespect to Arnie but he does it quite a bit in Pumping Iron [great film btw]. Its also an important ability to have for his current profession....
