freak_in_cage a wicked bloke/group of ppl could be a bunch of twats to someone else This. IMO there are no "in" groups, for whatever reason its just human natureto choose friends who are similar to yourself. If you're a succesful businessman who's extremely good looking and drives a Ferrari then the chances of your friends being succesful businessmen who are extremely good looking and drive a Ferrair's is extremely likely. If you are a chav who's on the dole and don't have a car because you would rather buy drugs then chances are your friends will be similar.... just examples.

The formation of these in groups is primarily done on the basis of social exchange. It can take the form of both a self-validation i.e. that a by sharing a homogenous set of beliefs, traits and values, an indvidual who would hitherto be insecure, can gain some sort of a sense of identity. Remember, it is uncomfortable for us, social creatures that we are, to go it alone in this world. We need that re-assurance from others to know that we are correct. Since we cant possibly deduce this by our individuality, we need that empirical social endorsement to legitimise ourselves. Further to this, when looking at in terms of additional social interaction, and once the first facet has been established, an individual then bases his interactions with others on what he might gain or lose socially; employing a simple cost to benefit model. Make no mistake, we are governed by self-intreset and even though our actions may be subtle or be manifested from a sub-conscious level, when we are interact with one another we are looking to see what we gain, in almost every instance, even if it continued amiability and support from freinds and family members as a seemignly harmless example in daily life. This is certainly not exclusive to the arechtypical image of the westernised, social climbing twit, it is a universal and cross-cultural social dynamic. Arent us humans a fcuked up bunch.
