Do "in" groups exsist in Adult life like they did at school

Do you think "the in" groups exsist in the workplace and in adult life in genral like they did at school. During school years its was the people who where good looking and good at sports who made the "A" list so to speak if this exsists in adult life what makes the grade? Is it being high up ladder, money etc?

Yeah. It can be money, position, years you've worked together. Sad really.

would you guys ever judge someone on there social status? Reason I am asking is because I wasnt in the "in" group and often find myself feeling not good enough to be X, Y, Z s friends

Well it all depends doesn't it, some people who were good looking, confident in school etc may be doing well and some wont... But the people who were social in their younger years have a head start imo. People who are social and get on with people tend to do better in life in general.

I worked at a place once where the people who went outside for a smoke with the managers became part of the "in" group. They all laughed and socialised over a fag, and guess who was in line for a promotion when they came up?

Reason I am asking is because I wasnt in the "in" group and often find myself feeling not good enough to be X, Y, Z s friends Don't limit yourself to your past, life is what YOU make it. Limits like fear are often just an illusion. I feel comfortable around anyone, im nice to everyone unless they aren't nice to me.

What is it that you worry abut socially?

What you see in schools is simply a manifestation of human nature so, in answer to the original question, yes of course such groups exist. Adults may be more subtle about it as compared to school kids but that's the only difference. We're all guilty of judging people in certain ways. Some people judge according to what car you drive, what house you live in & what clothes you wear. For others it will be about ethics & morals including relgiious beliefs. For others still (as I've seen here on MT) it's about how well people are percevied to 'take care of themsevles'. Most of wife's friends are married to guys who I think are complete tools, have nothing in common with & hence have no wish to spend time with. I'm sure they think I'm a weirdo too because I'd rather work out than play golf, have no interest in football, don't drink, don't eat meat (I know, I know, I'm a poor excuse for a man). Fair enough really, each to their own.

At my workplace at least, ability, intelligence and (depending on the role) a degree of social ease are the defining characteristics of the guys at the top. There are certain groups but they tend to be formed of people from particular desk- those that work together. Have seen very little of sycophant behaviour myself. If you bring in more revenue, you are more highly respect, end of. I imagine it's a little different for less results-driven industries though.

groups exist throughout society at any age. There will be cool groups in nursing homes too. The same applies in the natural world with animals also. It will never change.

In my school there was a direct link between popularity and IQ the people who thought they were 'it' were dumb as fck and in the bottom sets for most subjects.

Yeah , they exist as Adults too When you are a kid , they appear to be the "coolest kids" , As you get older you realise that being an individual is more important (and cooler) - and then you realise all those in the "cool clique" are actually there because they have no substance to their own character. Its funny , most of these cliques from my childhood can still be found on a Saturday night in the same old pubs , or in the gutter on the way home. Still clinging to their cool little gangs ...... Whereas the individuals , the ones that didn't (or perhaps didn't want to !!) fit into their ecosystem tend to be the ones that have stuff to show for their lives.
