Do these look safe to you guys?

I want to buy some dumbbells because I don't have much room to keep weights. I want some heavy ones so I can do deadlifts, presses and squats with them. I found these dumbells on eBay. They are 110kg, I think the ones in the picture are 105kg though! The only concern I have is would the collars be strong enough? Also they are 20inches long, wouldn't that make them super awkward? They are off a good seller so no worries there.

i wouldnt want to use collared BD's personally. spin locks would be ok, but a pain in the arse. collars on DB's are an accident waiting to happen if your using them for anything other than rows or lunges etc (where they are kept flat) curls, over head extensions, pullovers, chest and shoulder pressing, no thanks! accident waiting to happen!

Would spinlocks be safe? I assumed collared would be safer. They sell some really heavy spinlock ones too. Like 124kg, so thats like 62kg each. Im never going to press that weight mind lol.

they look much safer mate. 1" holes on the plates though so no use to you if you ever get the space for an olly bar. I guess you could go with the first set and get a hole drilled through the end of the dumbell and add a safety pin, something like an M10 Bolt and wingnut...

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll go for the standard spinlock ones. They work out cheaper for more weight too! :-D

dazc i wouldnt want to use collared BD's personally. spin locks would be ok, but a pain in the arse. Spinlocks are a royal pain in the ass for making up bigger DB's. They undo themselves far too easily, they are the worst option IMO. Much better to go with standard 1" plates and handles and use a good quality locking collar like a muscle clamp or lockjaw etc. I've also used a pair of spring collars each side to make up 40kg + DB's with good results, even cleaning them they never moved. Those spring collars are dirt cheap too, only a few pounds to get a extra pair. I've also tried oly plates and I found them a lot more clumsy. I'd rather buy a separate set of 1" plates as you can get a number of different handle lengths quite cheaply and make up different size DB's if your doing supersets etc.

Wouldn't trust them at all mate ! - the only way I could trust them would be to drill a hole in the end of the bar , so when you tighten them the bolt would physically go into the bar rather than press against it. I have had a 50k dumbbell fall apart on me (weld failed) and it was a horrible experience - you get pelted with weights from all angles. I didn't actually get hurt , but that was only luck.

In about 4 years of dumbell rowing with over 100kg dumbells. The collars have fallen off once. But when it did go, it went straight away and i did not get a chance to react, luckly my foot was not under it. I have been using clips. You have to be extra careful that your hand is the right postion as if a few cm's out and the bar will rotato to one side and the weights will go unless collar is very good. I do not feel clips are good enough to hold weights on around 100kg plus above your head if your doing dumbell pressing.

I have some Olympic db bars and proper collars but struggle with them for pressing movements, the handles are pretty thin in diameter and the collars and length make them difficult to get in position as you can't use your knees to get them up. Adjustable dumbbells are pretty crap IMO, as they are a nightmare to keep locked, Even spin lock ones loosen after a few sets.

Have used the exact same dumbell handles, olympic plates with spring collars with absolutely no problems to include quite heavy rows with them. Just remember to always take the collars off and not leave them on overnight etc and they should keep their shape and strength. Also tried with the collars in your link, but definitely would not recommend using them. Also bought my stuff from that ebayer as they have a shop/unit in Walthamstow East London. If your nearby sure he would cut you a deal

the way to use spinlock collars, is to put a rubber "o" ring against the collar of the bar. when the spinlock collar is tightened against the weight, it locks together, and will not undo. very safe.
