Do you make mony off your friends?
28 January 2012 13:21
( permalink)
I'm always doing deals here and there for different things. Like next month i'm taking 20 if my mates to watch boxing. ive sorted it all out, were having a meal first. then going onto boxing. so ill be making a few quid. not much, prb enough to finance my night. my misus says its imoral making profit off my friends. My argument is their getting a cheaper deal, they havnt had to run around sorting sh1t out like i have. and if it wasnt for me it wdnt have been possible. surely my time is worth some financial recompence. or am i just profitering of my mates lol??

Do your mates know how much you make on these deals? If not, what would they say about it?

If it was just one mate that would be as bit harsh, but TBH, if you are doing that much leg work and organising then I would hope my friends would offer something for the hassle (which in general they do). Failing that I'd probably be honest up front and say that for all the hassle and organising you'd rounded it up a bit. Maybe depends on the work you've put in, what it costs and what you've made.

I dont think there is any problem with you getting a free place for organising it. I have organised stuff before and its a ball ache so why not. plus if I were one of the mates I wouldnt have a problem with you making some cash either so long as I didnt have to do anything. In fact if it were girls we probably be presenting you with wine and flowers for the effort too.

well like i said its not much maybe 50 quid. just enough for a few beers. tbh i could have just got ticket and dished them out. But they all wantd food and what not. so i dont mind organising it but i hate the situtation where you all go for a meal then people start bikering about money. i prefer to get a set meal for a set price get the money first then its no bother. thats where im making few quid the manager in resterant is my mate.. btw not all 20 are my friends 10 are

i agree with your missus you say youre doing it to avoid all the bickering over money - so there is a benefit in you organising - then why do you need recompense wrong imo

For a night out? No chance. I'd probably hang on to a couple of quid in change if that is how the figures worked out but I'd certainly not build it in to the costs. Even at work I'd not profit from my good mates for print, doing their jobs at cost.

My view - Friends - at cost (or if the cost is my time then free eg. sorting out pc issues) Would never want to profit from a friend as would not expect it in return

i wouldnt make money off my friends in this situation, usually if my friends do something for me ill sort them out somehow as a token of appreciation but wouldnt be happy if they just assumed they could get a free night out of me for organising something we've had situations like this in our group before and its noticeable and people dont appreciate the guy making profit off his mates. i often drive when we go out to save money and cause i dont like drinking too much and i would never sneakily take a coupla quid off my mates as payment for my services of sorting the night out and acting as a taxi. if we get food after though they'll often buy me something or whatever but i would never ask or expect anything in return for offering a service to my friends, its just wrong.

Absolutely no way would I profit from friends. Most would get me a drink to show their appreciation or let me off petrol money/offer to drive to wherever we are going but I wouldn't over-charge them to pay for my night out.

So you've basically made a phone call to a mate to secure a meal and bought 20 tickets for the boxing, plus maybe arranged transport for all of you? I hardly see it as putting yourself out and surely if it were for your friends, the pleasure is doing it for them in the first place. To me it seems like you feel you are doing them a favour, thus you should charge? Why would it not be possible for them to arrange it themselves? I guess the problem is that it is for friends and you are charging them, which I would not do - as long as I was not out of pocket, for me its about bringing mates together, surely.

Why don't you use the money you made to buy them all a drink and thank them all for coming - now that would go down well.

Depends whether they know about it or not. I wouldnt appreciate a mate not being straight about it - but if they said, up front, "look I'll organise everything but youse guys will have to pay for my ticket if Im going to be doing all that" then Id be perfectly happy with that (I hate organising things myself and would consider it a good deal to chip in a little towards your ticket in exchange for you doing it for me!) In other words IMO its fine, as long as its all being done out in the open and everyone knows where they stand.
