that name was dropped some 32years ago! after we as a country stopped being so pathetic

Did we call them Alsatians due to the 'German' part of the real name then?.

yep, bit sad really but thankfully it was dropped and the true name lived on

Long haired GSD's look like a big ball fur lol

My parents have 7, 6 sort haired 1 long haired. The long haired one is the leader of the pack oddly, although female

It's weird drab about the long hair gene being recessive. We had the father of the 6 year old aswell and the bitch he mated with was short haired yet all her puppies were long haired.

Interesting mate, there must be more to it than just one gene then I guess

You'd expect at least half of the pups to be short haired if it was just a matter of dominant vs recessive

                    Xx              xx

                    Xx   Xx  xx  xx

Those are not kisses in case anyone else was wondering lol

The dominant gene basically over-rules the recessive gene mate

So the X's I put above are a simple example of how dominant and recessive genes work. The Xx and xx at the top represent the genes of the parents, and the X's underneath the genes of the pups

X is the dominant gene, in this case short hair

x is the recessive gene, in this case long hair

If you have any of the dominant genes then you have short hair. XX or Xx will give you short hair as X over-rules x

But you need both recessive genes to have long hair, xx

So you can see that even if one of the parents has just one dominant short hair gene, you would expect half of the pups to have short hair. In a different case where the father was double dominant then you'd expect all of the pups to have short hair, even if the mother was long haired

All this is assuming that hair length is controlled by one gene which is unlikely anyway given what Jackson said!

There will be much better and more indepth explanations online if you're interested mate, but those are the basics
