Looking To Train Correctly? - Make sure you have the right gym equipment

Whether you train on your own or with a training partner you need to make sure you use the right equipment for the right workout. Below is a list of popular fitness machines you can use to help train correctly:

The Chest

For chest workouts a good bench press with strong welded frames will help support you and the weight you lift when performing a press. The question is do you need a utility bench press or barbell bench?

Utility Bench - If you are looking for a bench that allows you to perform many different workouts then a utility bench is what you need. The disadvantage of a utility bench is you will need a partner to help pass you the barbell weights as you will not have a stand to place the weight bar onto. In general utility benches can take more loads compared to barbell benches.

Barbell Bench Press - The great advantage of a barbell bench press is you can bench on your own with moderate weight without the need for a partner, because you can place the weight back on the stands when finished, of course with heavier weights you will need always need a partner.

The Biceps & Triceps

One of the best ways to train the bicep or tricep is to use free weights, for this you need some good quality standard or Olympic weights, dumbbells and of course a 5, 6 or 7ft bar and even an oval bar for tricep.

Dumbbells - For Biceps dumbbells are great for seated or standing bicep curls, hammer curls, incline dumbbell curls (if you have a bench press) concentration curls and much more.

For Triceps one arm dumbbell extensions, seated tricep extensions and tricep kickbacks are good exercises.

There are 2 types of dumbbells - standard and fixed dumbbells, each have their own advantages but in my opinion fixed dumbbells are the best option, however they are more expensive compared to buying a dumbbell bar with weights.

If want to meet in the middle with price then we suggest the SelectTech Dumbbells

Barbells - For biceps barbells are great for standing bicep curls, preacher curls, reverse curls and more.

For triceps - skull crushers, close grip bench press and seated barbell extensions are great exercises. A good 5, 6 or 7 ft standard or Olympic barbell with good weights is imperative to training your biceps and triceps correctly.

The Back & Shoulders - Multi Gyms & Barbell

One of the best ways to train the back and shoulders is a multi gym with several attachments, or the use of free weights such as dumbbells and barbells.

Multi Gyms - The best back workouts are, seated cable rows, reverse pull downs bent over rows. The best shoulder workouts are upright rows, lateral raises and shoulder presses

Multi gyms are great because they provide multi workouts, and a good multi gym with different attachments will help you workout your back and shoulders to perfection.

Barbell - A 6 or 7ft Olympic barbell is great for dead lift, dead lift puts a lot of stress on the body making you sweat and eventually loose grip of the bar, a good bar with decent grip will help prevent your hands from slipping. Of course you could also purchase wrist straps to help keep grip

Legs - Smith Machine & Squat Stands

One of the best way to train legs is with a mixture of free weights and machines. Some of the great leg exercises are squatting, leg presses, leg extensions, standing leg curls, and hamstring curls.

Leg Press - Leg press machines are great because you can load them with a lot of free weights to really strengthen your leg muscles, because a partner is not generally required you can work quite safe by yourself. Just remember if you purchase a leg press remember you need to buy the Olympic weights separately.

Leg Extensions & standing Leg Curls & hamstring curls -
leg extensions and leg curls are normally attachments that you can add to a multi gym or sometimes a bench press. However you can buy them as separate machines with weight stacks but at a higher cost.

Squatting
squatting is probably one of the best exercises you can perform to help build and tone your leg muscles. If you can help it never squat alone, if you struggle to train with a partner a smith machine or a ProSpot machine will allow you to train on your own. If a smith machine is out of your price range or you simply don’t have room then I suggest purchasing squat stands, but remember squat stands require a partner to train with you where as a smith machine does not.

The Best 'All in One' Machine If you workout on your own
If you lift weights on your own the best 'all in one' machine we can offer is the ProSpot power system. Prospot is basically a multi gym with an Olympic bar attached to safety cables. The job of the safety cables is to keep you safe, if you accidentally dropped the weight the bar would simply lock in position, preventing injury allowing you to work safer with heavier weights on your own.

Freeweights are superior to cables for biceps?

    kickbacks for triceps?

No mention of squats for legs?

I understand the compnay need to use terms that are very popular but to some extent i feel its importnat to provide good info if you wish to be taken seriously by the seasoned trainer who could provide long term custom.

Freeweights are generally superior to cables when it comes to most exercises. Cablework can be a good supplement to freeweights, or as an alternative in order to hit the muscles differently, however.

Kickbacks are one good alternative for working the triceps. Note the article also mentioned tricep extensions with dumbbells.

I do agree that Squats should be mentioned as an alternative for Leg Presses.

okay I will admit they are not secrets to training correctly, maybe i should have called the article "the best equipment for training correctly".

Olympic barbell and dumbell set. Shed loads of plates.

                      Power rack.

                      Heavy utility bench.

                      JOB DONE!!

Have just read the 'secrets to training correctly', should it perhaps be renamed to 'equipment you require to build your own home gym.'

Some very basic information covered in many areas, the article needs to be more in-depth to be of more relevance to training correctly.

As for secrets, i find none above, i think secrets are those little things that you pick up in a gym over years, and there are definitely none of those above.

Edit: No, i didnt read all of the posts!

calling a bench with attached bar rest a "bench press" annoys me.

Try 'shrugs are good for traps' not back.

try middle traps and lower traps...

and anyway, upper traps are also considered a part of the BACK, not shoulders, although you generally train the upper traps when doing a shoulder workout because the upper traps extend from the BACK to the tops of the shoulders.....

to build up the middle traps and lower traps, the next time you do a back workout, lean stomach down on the top incline setting on a bench and do shrugs for the middle traps and the next setting down for lower traps, it doesn't hurt to do a little workout at one more setting down on the bench too so that you are working out the traps nicely...

                                so...

                                traps = BACK, not shoulders!

Try 'shrugs are good for traps' not back.

try middle traps and lower traps...

and anyway, upper traps are also considered a part of the BACK, not shoulders, although you generally train the upper traps when doing a shoulder workout because the upper traps extend from the BACK to the tops of the shoulders.....

to build up the middle traps and lower traps, the next time you do a back workout, lean stomach down on the top incline setting on a bench and do shrugs for the middle traps and the next setting down for lower traps,
it doesn't hurt to do a little workout at one more setting down on the bench too so that you are working out the traps nicely...

                                    so...

                                    traps = BACK, not shoulders!

The Trapezius muscle is one muscle with a number of insertion and origins so is usually talked about in reference to upper, middle and lower fibres.
                                    • The Upper fibres ELEVATE the scapula (lift it up)
                                    • The Middle fibres RETRACT the scapula (pull it back
                                    • The Lower fibres DEPRESS the scapula (pull it down)
So whilst you're correct in stating that prone shrugging works the middle fibres, you're far from telling the truth about how dropping the bench down a notch brings the lower fibres into the equation.
Various Rowing exercises bringing the resistance in a downward motion would work these tricky little buggers.

I'm sorry but if you're going to try and pick members up on the minutiae of training, please ensure you know how the muscles in question actually function.
