FAO UdosChoice/R33454/Nigeepoo/etc (RE spreads)

What are the views on the new generation of 'healthy' spreads? Are they pure evil like margarine, or are they more acceptable? I use pure butter myself, but everyone else I know uses low-fat spreads. Are they filth or are they generally accepted now?

Getting better, but still far from ideal. Butter is still a better choice, get essential fats elsewhere in diet

What sort of spreads do you mean by 'healthy spreads'?

James What sort of spreads do you mean by 'healthy spreads'? The commonplace supermarket spreads, Utterly Butterly, Flora, Benecol, etc. Vegetable oil based spreads, most claiming to be 'cholesterol reducing' etc. No matter how much I push the 'butter is better' arguement onto my family, they insist it 'makes you fat'.

it probably depends on what you want from a spread; some of them are good if you want to avoid saturated fats; but some butter alternatives can be awful to cook with...

Utterly Butterly is a vegetable oil-based spread; it claims to contain 70% less sat fat than butter. per 100g, sat fat: 14.7g. No claims as to Omega 3 or 6 fatty acid content Benecol is considered to be a 'functional food'; with added plant stanols with claimed cholesterol-lowering properties; aside from this, it is a vegetable oil-based spread (rapeseed mainly). It is high in MUFAs (33.4g/100g), contains no hydrogenated & some trans fats. Sat fat is 14.6g/100g Flora Pro-Activ is the only one of the Flora range to contain plant sterol esters (12.5%) and to claim cholesterol-lowering properties. per 100g: sat fat 8g; omega 6: 15.9g and omega 3: 2.7g Flora light vegetable; contains no plant sterols; it promotes omega 3 & 6 content. per 100g, sat fat: 9.3g; omega 3: 3g and omega 6: 16g Flora Vegetable Spread, per 100g: sat fat 12g, omega 3: 3.5g and omega 6: 26g Butter (Lurpack) sat fat 52g/100g Depends what you want from a spread...??

just look at the nutritional info on the packs... Bertolli is an olive-oil based spread (with rapeseed oil); 21% olive oil. sat fat 14g/100. The 'light' variety has only 16% olive oil/the biggest ingredient is water ; sat fat is 9.5g/100g, MUFAs 22g/100g; states not suitable for frying, no doubt due to the high water content... this raises the interesting issue of exactly what's in some of these spreads... I looked just at the 'fat' content of the abovementioned spreads (/100g): Bertolli 59g Bertolli Light 38g Utterly Butterly 59g Benecol (Buttery Spread) 63g Flora Pro Activ 35g Flora Light Vegetable 38g Flora Vegetable 59g Lurpack (butter) 81.5g the 'lightness' of some is obviously achieved by the addition of non-fat items; water, buttermilk... (also stanols/sterols for those products including these); whether this 'mix' appeals to you, will determine whether you chose to buy the product ultimately...

I prefer the taste of butter but my mrs preferes the 'spreadability' of marg like bertolli.... my compromise so far is anchor spreadable (anchor being my butter of choice). TBH tho, I only have a bit spread on a couple of rhyvita and that's about my lot
