Physio tonight, much pushing, pulling, twisting, stretching, kneading and other associated unpleasantness. However there were several positives and no negatives.  The champagne is still in the fridge but the butler has made a note that the glasses will need polishing

Diet coke actually, but that lacks the avoirdupois of champagne. So I lied for effect.

        Wednesday, 18th January, start 17:00

        Tricep pushdown
        15 x 10
        15 x 10
        15 x 10
        30 x 5
        45 x 5
        62 x 2
        62 x 8
Excellent, up again next week, I am getting to like these.

EZ bar row, palms forward, very strict, into the gut
        30 x 10
        60 x 5
        80 x 5
        102 x 2
        102 x 8
Hard work, but I managed the eight, and next week will be rewarded by even harder work. Sometimes, I have to admit, that the logic behind all this eludes me.

Several sets of remedial shoulder stuff involving some light dumbells, negative reps and a gentle mocking from the lemon fresh contingent, who now number two. Handsome Jeff has given these remedial exercises the title "handbags" I have to confess that I like that. it's funny and rather apt. I think I may keep that.

It being Wednesday I legged it to the home of the tubular bandage, even though girl number one was awol. Part of the service she offers is advice on who to see or not to see should she be absent. Tonight there was a young Polish lass who she had classed as "alright" which is high praise indeed. She was young and beautiful and firm and moist and GoatBoy bounced her off every wall there ever was. A very pleasant night indeed

              Friday, 20th January. Start 15:55

Heavy rain tonight and the usual traffic chaos that usually accompanies it, the carpark is underwater. During the twenty mile drive to the gym my left buttock was giving me some grief and no matter what I did or where I positioned in the seat, I could not make it stop.

Deadlift, me and bar on floor
              60 x 5
              60 x 5
              60 x 5
              60 x 5
              60 x 5
              100 x 5
              140 x 5
              140 x 5
              140 x 5
              140 x 5
              140 x 5
              140 x 5
              140 x 5
              140 x 5
              140 x 5
              140 x 5
The buttock grumbling throughout so I was not inclined to go any heavier than the 140, but the end of the session it had stopped grumbling but only just.

I spent some time trying to get undert he squat bar, half a dozen attempts in all, the first hurt like stink but it got progressively more comfortable as time went on. The last one was uncomfortable but no more than that. This was an empty bar though, Lord only knows what  will happen when we add weight. I will cross that bridge when we come to it, right at this moment I am just glad to have reached a bridge at all. DrRick was a late arrival so I stayed through his benches then we left. he to go home and me to the chippy. And very nice it was too.

                Monday, 23 January, start 17:05

                Hack squat
                50 x 10
                50 x 10
                50 x 10
                100 x 5
                160 x 5
                210 x 2
                210 x 8
Regular readers will know that I have been stuck on five at this weight for a few weeks. all I needed was a behemoth, Phil the behemoth to be precise, he stood at the side and growled out the reps in a kindly way  with a hint of underlying menace. I like Phil, he is a seriously good man to have around. He got me through this sticking point, onwards and upwards then.

                Leg curl
                10 x 10
                19 x 5
                26  x 5
                30 x 2
                30 x 5
Just as horrible as last week

                Leg extension, toes out.
                10 x 10
                20 x 5
                25 x 5
                30 x 2
                30 x 8
Last week I finished on 35 which was just a shade too heavy so this week I dropped it and found this surprisingly easy. Ah well, we'll just have to see what next week brings.

After this I wandered into the other room for five sets of getting under the squat bar with a sore shoulder. I am happy to report that not only did they get easier as I went on, but they were also easier than last weeks. Progress, gentle reader, we appear to be making a little. Only whisper it though, I wouldn't want to scare it away.

I was telling DrRick and Handsome jeff about a neighbour of mine who has a staffordshire bull terrier that I consider t one of the dimmest dogs in the world due to the fact that when walked it refuses to put any weight on it's front paws and to take that weight on the throat via the choke chain. Dumb I call it.
"Is that a dozy dog or what?" I asked.
DrRick stroked his beard and pondered a moment
" I should need to examine the dog first" he replied in all seriousness.
I collapsed in a heap while laughing heartily.
Fun night tonight. If there is a god, may he bless all the eccentrics.

More physio tonight (Tuesday) involving a goodly amount of pushing and pressing, involving some bits that don't generally get pushed or pressed. Finished a bit on the sore side but with a general air of a job well done. Confidence is seeping back

                    Wednesday 25th January, start 17:00

                    Tricep pushdown
                    20 x 10
                    20 x 10
                    20 x 10
                    35 x 5
                    52 x 5
                    65 x 2
                    65 x 8
I recall the 62 x 8 being hard last week so this was a pleasant surprise. Nowhere near as difficult as I expected. Some weeks do seem much harder than others but still we progress, so no reason to complain.

EZ row, palms forward, into the gut
                    30 x 10
                    60 x 5
                    85 x 5
                    105 x 2
                    105 x 5
These are getting difficult, I suspect my rate of progression may slow from here on in.

Five sets of getting under the squat bar, the first was awkward but not so much as usual, the second, third and fourth got progressively easier and easier than last time and the fifth was almost a delight. Nearly but not quite. A lesser man may have got excited over this and as a lesser man I almost did.
Off to the home of the tubular bandage where girl number one was back where she belongs. Her week off has made her even easier, and Lord do I like easy women

Back not too bad tonight although it did grumble a little, my hands have been less sore too, but nothing I can't live with. The infamous car park puddles have joined together to form one very large puddle, unless you are prepared to wet your feet they is only room for a couple of cars on there now. Much more of this and it will actually cease to be a car park. No chippy tonight as one it was raining very hard and two, i have a cottage pie at home that needed eating. DrRick kindly pointed out to me that all cottage pies need eating, and he is quite right. It needed eating tonight. Well corrected Sir. Memo to self - be more precise when speaking.
Five sets of bar in squat position, they are definitely getting easier.

Off to Adders this afternoon to keep an eye on Joe the Terrible and young Aaron. Did another five sets of getting under the squat bar, the first doesn't get any easier but the other four certainly are. Something positive to report to Mr. C on Tuesday
Went for a bit of a reccy in the Chorley area after,  I am on a mission on Saturday afternoon and I am not that familiar with Chorley although I am no stranger to it either.
Google maps (which is a wonderful thing) had given me guidance but it made no real sense. I missed the turning on the first run through but on turning round and coming back the other everything fell into place. I am confident that I can find my way to where I need to go by either of two routes.
Moral - you can't beat going and seeing for yourself. Roll on Saturday
As far as I know, forgiveness is for the benefit of the person doing the forgiving, not the one being forgiven

                            Monday, 30th January, start 1700

                            Hack squat
                            55 x 10
                            55 x 10
                            55 x 10
                            110 x 5
                            165 x 5
                            215 x 2
                            215 x 5

                            Leg curl
                            12 x 10
                            19  x 5
                            26 x 5
                            30 x 2
                            30 x 5

                            Leg extension, toes out
                            10 x 10
                            20 x 5
                            30 x 5
                            35 x 2
                            35 x 8

The hack squat were a little on the heavy side, a touch harsh on the knees as well. But I managed. Leg curls I still seriously dislike, the weight isn't great but it is horrible. The leg extensions were easier than I remember and so go up again next week I seem to be getting the hang of the new foot position.

After this lot I did another five sets of getting under the squat bar, much the same as yesterdays, but if anything a little easier, especially the last one.

A bit of handing off for DrRick who was back in his old shirt before his comp and then off into the cold, dark night

                              Physio tonight.

Fat Pete : "Permission to recommence squatting Sir" ?

                              Mr. Cosgrove : "Permission Granted"

Huzzah for Mr. Cosgrove. Of course he put a whole list of does, don'ts and be carefuls in there but that gentle reader is the gist of it, and what a gist it is.

                                Wednesday 1st February, start 17:15

Terrible traffic out of Irlam tonight so took an alternate route that took a while longer, hence the late start.

                                Tricep pushdown
                                20 x 10
                                20 x 10
                                20 x 10
                                40 x 6
                                55 x 5
                                67 x 2
                                67 x 8
                                55 x 8
                                40 x 10
For some reason, that I won't complain about the top set always appears easier than I expect it to be, one again managed the eight, so up again next week

                                EZ bar row, palms forward
                                30 x 10
                                60 x 6
                                85 x 5
                                105 x 2
                                105 x 8
Gettin' hard now, but I managed it, either 107 or 110 next time, not sure which yet.

Five sets of standing under the squat bar which one again, have got a little easier. Then off to the home of the tubular bandage to bounce girl number of a selection of walls. Damned cold tonight and due to get colder if the forecasts are correct, my finger ends are splitting, presumably from the cold. It's no great hardship but I could have managed without

Cold tonight, bitterly so, colder than a blonde's heart and Daymon Ruyon once said. My hands are giving me gyp, the cold weather causes them to split, generally at the most inconvenient points. Damn it all to Hades - at least it's warm there. I could easily have missed this tonight, but gentle reader you know me better than that. A gentle one though.

Deadlift, me and bar on floor
                                  60 x 5
                                  60 x 5
                                  60 x 5
                                  60 x 5
                                  60 x 5
                                  60 x 5
                                  100 x 5
                                  140 x 5
bar on floor, me on board
                                  140 x 3
                                  150 x 3
                                  160 x 3
                                  170 x 3
                                  180 x 3
Threes were done as fives would have been harsh on the hands. I finished here as young Aaron wanted help with his bench shirt and that was just the excuse I needed. The back is playing up as well, just creaking a little. GoatBoy has an adventure planned for tomorrow, he is really quite excited about it. I like it when GoatBoy's excited. Off to the chippy for a splendid puddin' and chips which is just the job in this weather.

                                    Leg curl

                                    30 x 5
The one truly horrible exercise. I don't think that I will ever like these. of course that only serves to illustrate juts how much I need them. hard though, hard and horrible

These on the other hand are a piece of piss.

                                    20 x 5
Well, it's back. Plank that I am I forgot to pack my squat shoes (well it has been a while) so I had to squat in my pumps which have no heel so depth was doubtless dubious. The weight is a joke but the shoulder handled it well and that is the limiting factor in this. Having spent a fortune in physio over the last eight months I will not get giddy and do something foolish now.  Five sets of squats duly completed. Gentle reader, it may be slow, but I am actually moving.

Holiday today as someone was coming to look at my boiler, he came, he looked and then he looked at my gas meter, he frowned and made a phone call. Another man arrived and replaced the main stop cock thing (or whatever the gas equivalent is) essential stuff. but it hardly makes for an exciting day off.

Quite busy tonight considering there is a comp at the weekend so a few regular faces were missing. Young Tom squatted very nicely, Joe the terrible benched wearing two, count 'em, two rams, Handsome Jeff was handsome and Iown with the welsh hips found a way to say "fried bread" that was quite unlike anything anyone had heard before. And now gentle reader  I have to introduce a touch of sadness. Girl number one has a cold and is therefore absent, and girl number two is on holiday so GoatBoy is dragging his bottom lip along the ground. he was cock-a-hoop on Saturday as he considered that to be installment number one for the week. If I pause from typing and sit still for a moment I can hear him sobbing gently and wondering why the fates conspire to stop him bring joy to others. Sometimes, I wonder myself. Poor GoatBoy, he doesn't know it yet but a treat is being planned for early March.

I am unwell. I have a cold and my nose is as runny as it is possible for a nose to be. It hurts from blowing and wiping and breathing is difficult. My knees ache. And it's cold, as cold as hell is hot. I shouldn't have bothered tonight. I spent most of the night chatting to Joe the Terrible (who I suspect is the source of the cold in the first place but who I cannot kill because I lack proof) and teaching some of the younger members the finer points of military press. Between this I did a few deadlifts, many sets of five. Some at sixty kilos and some at a hundred, I had no inclination to go heavier. I also blew my nose, frequently, and wiped it, even more frequently. The one and only plus is that yesterday I blew from my left nostril, thankfully into a tissue, the most impressive thing that as ever exited me. To took a full fifteen seconds to get it out. It was yellow and green and stripped in a manner not dissimilar to a barber's pole. It was as long as my longest finger and as thick as my little one. It almost frightened me. I rushed outside and hurled it directly into the bin and then weighted the lid with bricks. I removed them tonight as I am sure it is dead. This may be considered an unsuitable topic for a lifting journal, and it would be difficult to argue that it is. But the relief gentle reader. Once the battle had been fought and won, the relief was palpable and swept over me in waves. There is always a silver lining gentle reader. This wasn't much of one but it will do.
