Did you like the BBC Sherlock Holmes?

I did and I didn't. On the one hand it was enjoyable but on the other they phucked it up. There are no blackmailing dominatrixes in Sherlock Holmes but there is an Irene Adler. I find it odd that they mix the two. If you are to have an Irene Adler then she must be a singer, if you want a dominatrix, call her something else

Mycroft Holmes is a very corpulent chap yet in this series he isn't. They would never have cast Sherlock as a fat bloke so why get that detail wrong. Riddled with pointless, schoolboy errors. yet still enjoyable

I'm not anything like knowledgeable chap that you are on the subject but I thought it was some of the best telly that I had watched over the Christmas break, although admittedly there wasn't a lot of competition.

Sometimes being a smart arse doesn't work to your advantage.  It was an enjoyable piece of telly, but the little errors do grate

        Wednesday 4th January, start 17:00

        Tricep pushdown, very strict
        15 x 10
        15 x 10
        30 x 5
        45 x 5
        60 x 2
        60 x 8

EZ bar row, palms forward into the gut
        25 x 10
        50 x 5
        75 x 5
        100 x 2
        100 x 8

Many light, slow negative shoulder stuff as advised by the fat Pete medical team. really dull and harder than you would think.

Off to the home of the tubular bandage on near empty motorways where girl number one greeted me with open legs. We let the new year in as is the custom at this time of year and then she was hurled, with force against more walls than she could count. It's good to have her back.

Also a large thank you to DrRick who was nothing short of hilarious tonight and cheered me up considerably. His "I appear to have forgotten to lift any weights for quite some time" will live long in the memory.

Plus Bolton won and United lost. Good ! Serves 'em right for blocking the M61 for about seven Wednesday nights every year.

According to the radio the goal Bolton conceded was a stonker and the like of which is seen only rarely. Match of the day beckons I reckon

Pete, I have only a cursory knowledge of Sherlock Holmes and you seem to be the resident MT expert......

I have bought a Kobo e-reader (similar to a Kindle) to take on my next adventure, it has come with 'The adventures of Sherlock Holmes' for free this contains:

               I. A Scandal in Bohemia
              II. The Red-headed League
             III. A Case of Identity
              IV. The Boscombe Valley Mystery
               V. The Five Orange Pips
VI. The Man with the Twisted Lip
VII. The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle
VIII. The Adventure of the Speckled Band
IX. The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb
               X. The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor
XI. The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet
XII. The Adventure of the Copper Beeches

And and 'The memoirs of Sherlock Holmes':

            Adventure I.     Silver Blaze
            Adventure II.     The Yellow Face
            Adventure III.     The Stock-Broker's Clerk
            Adventure IV.     The "Gloria Scott"
            Adventure V.     The Musgrave Ritual
            Adventure VI.     The Reigate Puzzle
            Adventure VII.     The Crooked Man
            Adventure VIII.       The Resident Patient
            Adventure IX.     The Greek Interpreter
            Adventure X.     The Naval Treaty
            Adventure XI.     The Final Problem

Additionally, The hound of the Baskervilles and I've also acquired the new House of Silk novel.

Are there any of these you specifically recommend? And any stand-out stories I've not got?

            Thanks....

The House of Silk I acquired a few weeks back, and devoured it in one sitting. I enjoyed it immensely.

              Of the above -
               The Red-headed League
The Man with the Twisted Lip
               Silver Blaze
              and
               The Musgrave Ritual
are particular favourites and "The sign of Four" is also very good.

Of course you should really read them all. I love them. They accound fro only about one percent of Arthur Conan Doyle's total literary output but everyone has heard of them and most would struggle to mention the other 99 percent. This is why ACD grew to hate Holmes (but could never bring himself the money he made for him). It is worth reading about ACD's relationship with Holmes just for a bit of background.  Good luck - I hope you enjoy them

                Friday 6th January, start 15:45

                Deadlift
                60 x 5
                60 x 5
                60 x 5
                60 x 5
                60 x 5
                60 x 5
                100 x 5
                140 x 5
me on one board, bar on floor, straps on, double overhand grip
                140 x 5
                170 x 5
                190 x 5
                210 x 5
                190 x 5

Then quite a bit of shoulder rehabilitation stuff involving very light weights and very slow negatives. Bit of banter with Aaron and DrRick and then offski.
The straps were used tonight as I have a few splits in the palms of my hand, one in the left and two in the right, one in the right is in a very awkward spot for gripping, it was fine on the 60 and the 100 but 140 made it as sore as a sore thing, hence the straps. Not a problem with the straps

Trip to Bredbury this morning as some of the weightlifting chaps are having a run-out there. It's Pete the Painter's first weightlifting comp at the tender age of very old. So I wouldn't want to miss that.

Went to bredbury and had a fine old time, Pete the Painter did very well as did Handsome Jeff and Mr L. Unfortunately, as is the nature of these things the comp ran on for a huge amount of time, and even though there was no great number of lifters it took over four hours. On the plus side the venue was on a retail park and there was a cafe nearby, where a full english with tea and extra toast saved the day.  I had a tickle on the horses yesterday that left an odd five pounds in the betting account so I had seven fifty on the manchester derby to finish three two either way. The later part of the journey home was quite exciting, comprising a portly, bearded gentleman driving at or just under the legal speed limit on very recently pressure-checked, correctly-inflated tyres muttering at the radio. Starting with "come on then city bloody well score" or similar, then "and again you blue bastards, get another" and finishing with "Bloody stop now, the pair of you, that's quite enough. Luckily the twenty odd overpaid oafs running around in the rain actually listened and I was rewarded with a handsome bit of cash

Watched Sherlock last night - absolute and complete and utter rubbish. A moron's interpretation of a classic tale. This series seems to be going the way of the last, starting well and descending into drivel as it progresses.

A car transporter broke down in lane one of the M60 between junctions 13 and 14. It's four lanes at that point so I was thinking it might not be that bad. I thought wrong, hence the late start.

                        28 x 2
                        28 x 8
Well, well, well, who would have thought it, I got the eight and after only about a squillion attempts

                        Leg extension
                        30 x 10
                        40 x 5
                        50 x 5
                        60 x 2
                        60 x 5
That's the full stack now so in future I will experiment with different foot positions in the hope of making it harder so the stack will last longer.

Some light dumbell remedial work for the shoulder and waited with Handsome Fred, DrRick and Joe the Terrible for a photographer from the local press who wanted a picture of the commonwealth heroes. Then away into a very mild and dry night, if this is winter, I like it, I like it a lot

Still, squatting tonight went better than it has for a while so all is well again.

Excellent news. It is a source of constant distress to me that Holmes neither squatted nor deadlifted

More physio tonight. I spent two minutes in an armlock of sorts while deliberate attempts were made to make the shoulder "clunk". It didn't do it. This gentle reader is excellent news. I feel a load has been lifted from my shoulders. It is still in the vicinity but it is lifted. Happy days. Optimism is high and I am quite cheerful

There now followed many light, assorted shoulder raises, with slow negatives for remedial purposes. During which I had a long and very interesting talk with Handsome Jeff who spoke perfect sense as always. The main topic was what I was going to do over the coming year on the training front and maybe even longer term than that. Much food for thought. The decision is almost made. I have discussed this with several people who are extremely knowledgeable about these things and whose opinions I both respect and value. I have outlined a rough plan and everyone thinks it a good one and no-one (yet) thinks I'm a twat. So that can't be too bad. Hasty decisions are always bad, and I like to be comfortable with my plans and intentions. It's settling in nicely. I grow more comfortable by the day.
Several people have commented on my weight loss and slight reshape, intrigued I weighed myself some fifteen minutes ago - 132.7 kilos, 20 stone 12 if my maths hasn't deserted me. Not as big a change as I was expected, but no matter. The weight is immaterial, it the shape that counts.
Away to the home of the tubular bandage to hurl a sprightly blonde against a selection of walls. It went very well tonight, I, she and the walls were all well up for it. Happy days

Alan was a good 580 tonight, that's about 265 in new money

Deadlift, me and the bar on the floor
                                  60 x 5
                                  60 x 5
                                  60 x 5
                                  60 x 5
                                  60 x 5
                                  60 x 5
                                  100 x 5
                                  140 x 5
                                  180 x 3
                                  220 x 3
                                  235 x 1
                                  250 x 1
                                  265 x 1
                                  250 x 1
And they were all very good, the 265 was a touch sloppy at the top but that was laziness on my part rather than anything else. Good start position and plenty of leg in them all, plus the hands have healed nicely and gave no trouble at all

Fast-as-phuck deadlift, double overhand with straps
                                  100 x 5
                                  140 x 3
                                  160 x 3
                                  170 x 3
                                  180 x 3
All good and high and up on the toes. Alan is well pleased which in turn means I am as well. Phil the behemoth was down and commented on my new slimmer appearance. Phil has an eye for these things so I tried the belt on, this was tight when on the first hole, today, it is tight on the second. Holey Moley it's been a long time since it was able to be fastened on that hole. To celebrate this new slimness I rushed to the chippy and had puddin' chips and peas and very nice it was to. I am a great believer in that old and far too underused but rather splendid expression "say it with gravy"

Popped along to Adders this afternoon to do a bit of remedial stuff for the shoulder, Joe the Terrible was there as always as was Young Aaron and Phil the behemoth. The very presence of Phil improved Aaron's squats considerably.

Just watched the last episode of Sherlock and absolutely loved it - right up to the point where Moriarty shot himself. From that moment it descended into complete and utter bollox. I wish the buffoons who wrote it would shoot themselves. Oafs.

                                        Leg curl
                                        10 x 10
                                        19 x 5
                                        26 x 5
                                        30 x 2
                                        30 x 5
Lordy these were hard, only just made the five, in fact an argument could be made for four and a half. I really dislike these which of course, only serves to show how necessary they are.

                                        Leg extension
                                        10 x 10
                                        20 x 5
                                        30 x 5
                                        40 x 2
                                        40 x 5
As promised last week I tried angling the feet out to reduce the weight and Lord what a difference it made. I should maybe finish at 35 next week as the last set was a real grind.

I did a bit of remedial stuff with slow negatives with light dumbells and then tried to get under the squat bar again. This time I tried five times and each time it got a little easier, but each time the shoulder ached. I stood with the bar on my back and it ached, but if I stood for a while it didn't ache any more. I shall report these findings to the man tomorrow and see what he thinks, but I tend to think that this may very well be a positive thing. Of course we are talking an empty bar here and all this fuss over something so trivial does make me rather sad. So to all those who can and do just grab the bar and get under it without thinking (as I used to) start to appreciate what you have. Be happy that you can do it
