Vettel seems the best value at $6m.

Stupid move by Button IMO.

Every commentator and even Jordon told him to stay put.

did he have a choice though?  i read that mercedes want an all german line up of drivers, so maybe it wasnt so clear a choice?

suppose the only people that know are the teams and button!

Well he got twice as much ££ didn't he, weren't Mercedes offering £3m. I don't think it's a bad move but I do believe he will be second to Hamilton.

I think he will be in a more competative car this year, but whether it confirms his greatness or luck we'll have to wait and see.

Kimi has no drive, might do Rallying and/or Le Mans.

Brawn were only offering a 1 year contract for about £4m I think.
Hes just got a 3 year contract for £6m a year.

Yeah, simple Maths when you've already achieved your life long dream really. 30y/o and set yourself up for 6m a year for the next 3 with one of the top teams.... can't see how it's the 'wrong move' TBH

They are now saying that Brawn had 12m on the table for next year (8m +4m points bonus) but his trip to McLaren breached his terms so they pulled it..... but who knows, only those that where there.

I heard this rumour a while ago and didnt believe it. I was shocked yesteray and i honestly believe it was a bad move for Buttons career but for the money he would be a fool to turn it down.
Realistically, the brawn/mercedes team had a lucky start to the season and without this, Button would not be world champ. Will next years champ be in a Mercedes? I doubt it and with the line up that is now being mentioned id be amazed.
Makes a cracking season for next year now though. Roll on March time.

Oh and Alonso will crush all anyway!

alonso will be an also ran. . . lol!

im sure he will do well.  Tell you what though, i cant wait to see hamilton and button in the same car.  At least i hope they get the same car, doesnt always happen.

But effectively, mclaren dont have a number 2 driver, they have 2 number ones, be interesting to see how they manage the team.  hopefully better than the last year  lol

Tbh Daz im hoping to hell that Mclaren and Ferrari have equal-ish cars. The thought of 4 potential world champs (3 already are) in 2 teams, all battling is exciting!
I say most years that i cant wait for the season to start but this time i really mean it!!!

Would people rather we start a new thread next season or should i just remove the year from this thread title to keep it all as one thread?

Predition time for next season..... Ill go first.

1st Alonso
2nd Hamilton
3rd Button (if Massa keeps his head after the crash then id stick him here instead)

We'll start a fresh one I think.

Tricky call, all guess work now. I think the top 2 will be between the 2 you suggest assuming Ferrari get their act together. I think Massa will have the legs on Button too. Can't discount the Red Bull boys either, they could easily upset the top end. Not certain they'll be right up their for the Chamionship tho.

Id love Vettel to be in the mix as the way i see it, he is the next big thing after Hamilton.
I expect Vettel to be the No 1 driver in the new Mercedes team once his contract with Red Bull expires.
Apart from losing the British GP, the actual racing side of F1 looks very good for the future.

Re:Formula 1 09/10 season - 19 November 2009 20:23
trouble is, there are big changes for next year, so we could have another repeat of this year, where the competitive cars are unexpected!

will be great to see how it goes though!

i dont think vettel or webber can be discounted, as well as hamilton, button, alonso, and massa!

if i was a betting man, id say mclaren and ferrari will have the most competitive cars, but that redbull and mercedes will be right there to take the points if there are any mistakes, and challenge at tracks that suit them.

we also have some new teams, so who knows what they will produce!

Lots of talk of Renault pulling out, and honestly I dont think Alonso has a chance.

Button is going to Team Hamiliton.

Ferrari have halved their rescources due to the new rules.

If anyone here get a god line of sight, take out Ecclestone would ya?..hes done a great job killing the sport.

I vote for keep the same thread just change the title nearer the time.

I too honestly can't wait for next season either, whos going to finish where though could go so many ways.

I wonder what odds I could get on the current WCC Brawn not winning a race in 2010....

In defence, Mike Kimberley had a lot to do with the Lotus/Proton project getting off the ground. Also, there's no way that a team being put out by a group who own Lotus, would not use the specialist engineering expertise already in place at Lotus.

Whilst it isn't 'Team Lotus' from the old days with Colin Chapman throwing his hat in the air etc, there is a very real connection with Hethel and is probably as close as you are going to get in this age of prohibitive costs.

Certainly better than the LiteSpeed proposal.

german company, lots to prove, it does make sense really.  But i suppose it depends if hes fit and able, and also willing to drive for anyone other than ferrari.  Hes always on their pit wall, so the only bit im struggling to see happening is that he wouldnt drive for ferrari IF he wanted to drive again

I'm not sure how anyone can predict anything other than a wishful guess for next season, at least until the rumours from winter testing come through.

After this season, and the rule changes, almost anything could happen.

It's not just Bernie that's killing the sport - the FIA make the rule changes including dropping the re-fueling which is just stupid.

I agree mate, here's my main querys tho...

1. He seems to be very loyal to Ferrari. They are still paying him to be fair so who knows how strong his loyalty is?

2. Is the mercedes really going to be a top team and would he be prepared to take the risk on being mid grid fodder?

3. Does he genuinely believe that he is still good enough to be at the top of the sport and if he doesnt, would he be happy getting his ar5e spanked by younger drivers.

4. Imagine you are Schumacher... You are officially the best F1 driver on actual race wins and results, only a personal opinion will differ from the facts. Would you take the risks of points 2 and 3 above when you have nothing to prove?

Just to confirm for those who cant remember, im a major Schumacher fan but i personally dont think he could still cut it with the current crop anymore. Alonso finished him in an inferior car...

some good points mate, on the subject of schuey, im a take it or leave it person, not a fan but no real hate either.

My opinion is, and always has been that he is one of the best drivers that F1 has had,  But pushed into records of truly great things, by a number of factors.  Driving for ferrari, who unquestionably, for years had the quickest car on the grid, helped by huge budgets.  Having a great driver like rubens as a team mate, and a team who were very strong with the team orders, and what they expected of rubens.  Not once did they ever allow him to take points from schumacher. Without the team orders, im not so sure schumacher would have as many championship titles.

Im not detracting from his achievements, BUT i do think that some of it was circumstance AS WELL AS talent

so in todays climate, in a decent car, i think he would be quick but not outstanding.  Probably midfield like you say.

He may well come back and prove me wrong though!  In fact id love to see him back, and see how quick he really is, in a car that isnt miles ahead of most of the field

True but he still beat him and this was a while ago. Could Schumacher come back from this long out when was beaten last time when he was possibly still in his best form...

Like Daz has pointed out, he had every available ammenity at his finger tips throughout his glory years, he was not automatically the best driver. This would not be the case anymore, the car may not be the best and the competition imo is the best it has ever been...
