Fresh Chicken vs Frozen Chicken
28 May 2011 04:36
( permalink)
I have been buying fresh chicken from the grocery the past week and that **** is getting expensive fast. I'm curious if anyone chooses frozen cuts by the bag and if so how they taste in comparison. I'm not looking at the cuts that are pre-cooked and microwave ready but frozen breasts that you still season and cook. Thanks for your guys input.

Great for bodybuilding meals day in and day out, I wouldn't choose them for a nice meal with the wife or whatever if that makes sence. Can taste reasonable but they tend to have lots of extra added water so shrivel up a bit when cooking.

3.5kg for a tenner is very, very cheap. Large wholesale (1MT minimum) prices for fresh chicken is about £3.35-3.50 a kilo not £2.85. Back to the op question - fresh always for me and it's top notch and about £4 a kilo or £20 for a 5kg gas flushed tray.

It's a little frozen food place in Speke, Liverpool. I got chatting to the owner and he reckons the same chicken is bought by M&S for their chicken dishes. Tastes lovely and doesn't shrink either

honestly thats what i get it at guvnor thats what ive always paid i usually go to my meat guy every sunday abut half an hour before they are shutting up shop at the market and he usually sorts me out with a good deal like that i got 1.5kg of rump steak for a tenner aswell off him i think the main reason its so cheap is he just wants to get rid of the last of his stock. hes one of them meat guys thats shouts at the market crowd on a mic saying he'll do you a deal if you know the type im on about. also when i didnt go to this guy i used to get frozen chicken from the local asian supermarket and could get 15kg of frozen brazillian chicken for 45 quid maybe give one of those a go op imo the deals are there you just have to shop around

I would buy bulk fresh from the market or similar and if needed freeze down in frezzer bags and take out when required. Just because we train and may be on a budget dosen"t mean we have to give in to taste and quality.

I appreciate all the great feedback. I have not looked at any actual butcher shops so perhaps I'll take a look and see what they've got. I bought some fresh free-range from a health food store and felt good about that but taste wise it was the same as the stuff at the grocery. I'll take a look around and see whats what, I have 3 frozen breasts on the grill as we speak so I'll have to see how they turn out.

I was not doubting you shread just surprised at the price. If it tastes good and does not shrink when cooked then it's probably fine but still very, very cheap! Do you know his normal prices for chicken?

Just touching back on this subject. I use a no-salt lemon pepper to coat the breasts then grill them. The fresh was a little plumper vs the frozen, but the frozen was far cheaper. Over all taste wise it is comprable (the difference is there but not enough to be concerned with for bb'ing purposes).

Papa Lazarou I get fresh chicken for 10kg for £54 delivered from www.tarelgin.com Me too and it tastes great. I did take advantage of lidls offer at the weekend of 540g of chicken for £1.99 but after trying it I would say tarelgin was better.

Yeah just stick it in freezer bags and freeze then take out when required. If you are ordering 10kg it will come in 2 x 5kg plastic trays.
