Getting a new laptop soon - Questions 18 March 2010 10:58 (permalink)
Hoping to get a new laptop soon as the one I have is fooked.

Anyway I have 3 gigs of DDR2 Ram in current laptop (1gig module and 2 gig module). Its on a Motherboard running a core 2 duo

My question is if I but one of the new i3 or i5 laptops could I transfer some of my old memory?

I found a decent looking dell machine for about £500. Was an i3 processor but only had 2 Gigs of ram which is less than my current machine!

Does anyone know?

Also would love some recommendations for new machines. £600 limit. Claiming of house insurance for the demise of this one which is handy!

    I don't think so as i think off the top of my head the newwer ones will be DDR3.

    Anyway - there'd only be 2 slots and they'll most likely already be populated.

    I'll have a scout for any good offers. Are you looking for a 13-15" screen notebook or a bigger machine?

      New RAM is DDR3 and i would be tempted to see if they are switching to DDR3 VLP DIMMS

      a design i am working with right now employs 2x DDR3 4GB VLP DIMMS so no reason that you cannot switch your proposed 1GB to new higher GB sticks

      check what DDR it is and the profile height

      VLP = VERY LOW PROFILE

          Cheers chaps.

          Got a 17 inch screen now so that would be nice. Mind you if I have to sacrifice screen size for really good spec then thats fine. Maybe a small one wouldnt be so bad as this one weighs a ton!

          Got really bad chest doms and picking it up this morning was painful!
