HNCs costing a whopping £3.5k!!!
03 February 2012 09:18
( permalink)
I finish my Diploma in Engineering this June. It is a kickstart to those looking to become Engineers via whatever route, electrical or mechanical. I also want to move onto my HNC and eventually HND with the possibility of gaining my Bachelors. So I enquired with my tutor last night and found that he cost for the HNC alone is £3.5k!!! That's a lot of cash! So, apart from kindly asking work for a donation, are there any other options such as student loadns, even though technically I'm a mature working student? Thanks

Thanks Yes you can take personal loans for education from the banks I took mine IIRC from Barclays pretty low interest etc. Not sure if a HNC qualifies but you can try.

£3.5 might sound a lot but that's a bit of a bargain when you consider HNC/HND are equivilant to Level 1 and Level 2 at degree level which from September 2012 would cost you £9K per year!! If you did go down that route you should try to find a HNC/HND at a college which is linked in with a local university that has a natural progression route and let you top up to a degree in a year. This is what they now do with the Foundation degrees which were brough in to replace HND/HNCs. Have a good look round because colleges and universities are desperate for students for 2012 because they are expecting a massive decrease in student numbers due to the increase in fees. Good luck

The cost of educating somebody at degree level has always been around £9K per year. It is just that previously that the government paid this. Over the last few years the government have reduced their contribution and the student is having to pay the remainder. The government then said that universities could charge upto £9K per annum, and any government funding would be removed. It expected that only the Russell Group unis would charge this, but virtually everyone, including all the ToyTown Polys have. So the government now can't afford to fund all the students who would have gone at the £9K loan figure to go so for Sept 2012 they have drastically reduced the number of places that universities can offer. To think the last government had a target that 50% of the population should have a degree, equally ridiculous!! The whole system is flawed and I imagine that over the next couple of years we will start to see some of the smaller universities start to go bankrupt!!

What level of qualification is the Diploma in Engineering you are doing now? How long does each course last? Can't you just skip the HNC and go straight to the HND to get the qualifications quicker?
