08 March 2010 19:23
( permalink)
Hello Can someone recommend me an effective supplement (at a decent price) that would lower your cortisol levels? I'm convinced this is the reason to why I have been getting no more than 4 hours sleep for the past couple of months! My symptoms points towards a high cortisol level.......lack of sleep, lack of libido, losing muscle, fat-gain....I have had all of these in the past weeks and months. SOmebody help!!
Excuse me for my bad English

Cortisol blockers are BS imho.. you DO need some cortisol in your system, if your not sleeping due to stress/diet etc then a supp won't help you need to address those problems first.

Hawar, the symptoms you describe are typical from lack of sleep. Lack of sleep will decrease testosterone and decrease growth hormone. HOWEVER, this is not the root of your problem. The lack of sleep is. Sort out the cause of the problem, not the transient symptoms. ie look to reduce life stresses where possible. Look toward relaxation techniques. Avoid stimulants. Work towards regular sleep patterns etc etc

Although there are supplements which can reduce cortisol I am surprised elevated cortisol would make you sleep poorly. I would echo what Partyboy says and avoid ALL stimulants for a couple of weeks and maybe look at non-drug based methods to aid sleep quality.

One, stop self diagnosing, if you believe you genuinely have an issue with cortisol then visit your GP and you will get bloods done to confirm whether this is the case. There is plenty you can do to lower cortisol, one being dont diet to had and go uber low carb. TBH, your symptoms just point to the classic case of dieting far too hard.

I haven't been dieting. i've been bulking for 6 or so months. I had a blood test 2 weeks ago. i phoned my doc yeasterday and he said the blood is fine. although at the time i didn't know that i had high cortisol levels....so the doc wasn't looking for the amount of cortisol in my blood in paticular.

Really? It doesn't sound like you saw the doctor at all. I really sympathise with your problem BUT YOU ARE PRESSING THE SELF-DESTRUCT BUTTON. Blood tests really take 2 weeks to come out?

Maybe this will shut you up as far as the doctor issue is concerned! http://www.muscletalk.c...aspx?m=3838102&high= (unless you think i planned all of this in advance!) as for the duration of the blood test....they was a delay at the surgery for somereason.

Ok, so in which case you need to ask your doctor to test your cortisol levels. If it wasnt requested, it wont get tested for. Everything else ok, thyroid function etc? Can you go back and get a second opinion perhaps?

EDIT: changed my mind. I agree with Big Daddy that you should seek more advice from your doctor. Ask specifically to check for cortisol levels if you think that's a problem. Other than that don't listen to Big Daddy cos he's just being unhelpful and weird.

Hawar The symptoms are there............lack of sleep, lack of libido, lossing muscle, gaining fat....i've had all of these in the past weeks and months! Lack of sleep - probably too much of life's stresses. This will probably increase cortisol. You are assuming the cortisol is affecting your sleep etc etc. It's almost certainly the other way round! Lack of sleep is affecting cortisol levels. Do you see the difference? You are getting the horse and cart mixed up. More importantly, lack of sleep will decreases testosterone and HGH. This will undoubtedly be detrimental to muscular gain and fat loss. So, we are back to square 1. Address your sleep problems by addressing the root cause of your lack of sleep; whatever they might be - money issues, relationship problems, work or financial problems etc etc etc

Decided to go a bit easier on the lifting though, which isn't ideal considering that i will start a cut tomorrow, and you need to maintain the heavy workout you've done in the past to hang on to as much muscle as possible. thanks anyway mate, very helpful.
