Half marathon 04 January 2012 13:50 (permalink)
Ive entered a half marathon on may 13th. So far I've done 4 1 mile runs.
How quickly should I be increasing to 2 miles, 4 and so on??

There is no right or wrong answer to this, it depends on your goals really.

Training to complete the distance will be a rather different plan to training to complete it in, say, under 90 minutes.

You could do a lot worse than to have a look at the Runners World training plans for a half marathon - http://www.runnersworld.c...-238-244-258-0,00.html - there are lots of plans here depending on your goals.

If you've not got a proper pair of running shoes I'd suggest you get a pair - ideally go to a specialist running shop and them have a look at your running style and recommend a pair based on that. You should put in quite a few miles training for this event it will be a lot more comfortable in a pair of shoes suited to your running gait.

Thanks for the advice.  The first thing I did was go out and buy some decent running shoes... It has made a massive difference to the running.
I will check that link out.

Just out of interest which hoes did you go for. I went to a specialist running shop a few years ago which shows foot displacement to match the right shoe. I rotate outwards and I'm heavy so conveniantly my Asics costs about £90 a pair. It is what it is, but I've never gone over on my ankle since and the cushioning is bang on (seeing that you have 3/4 times your bodyweight impacting on your feet when running).

I used to aim for an extra 5-10 minutes on my one long run every other week. My other 3 runs were mixes of shorter distance at speed and a couple of  HIIT sessions.

SIFU, I don't think that was directed at me, but for what it's worth I got Nike Lunar Glide IIs after having my gait checked, I've run hundreds of miles (in fact it's probably time or me to get a new pair!) without any discomfort.

When I was training for a half marathon I basically tried to run a mile a week further at a pace of 10 mins per mile and once I had got beyond a 10mile run I focussed on running more quickly. I was doing something like two 5k runs and one long a week as I recall - I made up my own training routine rather than follow a schedule.....

            Hi

I have a pair of asics too. Recommended in the shop and also by some fighters I know that cover miles and miles on the road...

              Hi
4 months isnt long to train, if you havent done a massive amount of running before.

You need to push yourself and try and run further i was doing it like this:-
Sunday - Long run 8-12 miles
              Monday - Off
              Tuesday Short run 3 miles
Wednesday - Medium Run 5-7 miles
Thursday - Short run 3 miles
              Friday - Off
Saturday - Short run 3 miles

You need to go on a run and push yourself even if you cant run, walk fast, you need to practice just being on your feet. As you're  gonna be on your feet for 2 hours. Shoes, diet and hydration are very important as well dont forget these. Get yourself a foam roller as well, will help massively with recovery.

If you can only just manage 1 milers try upping the distance on 1 or 2 of your runs. It will get easier but you have to put the miles in.  Try and up it every week even if its by more minutes running rather than complete miles.
I also use http://www.endomondo.com that way i can see how far and fast i have run. (GPS tracking for your mobile phone)

              Good luck :-)

                Great advice from HSC.

I am in the market for decent running shoes as we speak.  I went for a run on Thursday and my lower back was almost siezing up in agony.  I think it's because I have cheapo gym shoes as opposed to running shoes.
