Holiday For Mum and her BF, Where?
13 March 2010 14:14
( permalink)
Not seen my mum in ages, seeing her tomorrow for mothers day going to treat her and her bf to a holiday somewhere nice, would be a nice treat and she deserves it for putting up with me when i was younger even if she was a crap mother. Was thinking Jamaica or the Maldives, doesn't have to be somewhere for older people as she's not long turned 40 and is still young at heart. What would you recommend for her and her bf? They both like a good time, drinks etc and are quite adventurous. Where would you recommend? Someone has said the Maldives is Paradise and amazing but there is not much to do.

Maldives is paradise but full of Honeymooners. I think different islands have different vibes but typically you are quite isolated and there's limited entertainment outside the bedroom......unless you are into scuba diving. Insane blue water though. We were on an island with 16 beach bungalows in a circle round the island. You could walk round the entire island in 20 minutes. I'd just met the girl but if I hadn't I think I'd be pretty much bored to death by day 3. I was 29. Most were around 50 I'd say with the odd younger just married couple. No nightlife from my experience.... but again there are islands where there is more action but the actual island isn't as picturesque. Jamaica is completely different. I can't remember much as I smoked too much in those days. Lots to see, very chill, great food and nice beaches. However we were in an all inclusive hotel and that was dull so you need to venture out which isn't advised in some areas. We ended up in a reggae festival and got into a load of bother. Police came to rescue..... you definitely have to be careful at night.

Er....and what do you mean 40 but young at heart!!? 40 is not bloody old in the first place THATS why she's young at heart!! Gee, you young 'uns these days haven't a clue. Does she like chill out lay about do sod all holidays or does she like looking round places? If chill out then the Maldives or Jamaica would be good but for an active holiday I'd recommend a nice city break...Rome is my favorite.

Lol take it your nearly 40 Kitty and yeah she is quite active and so is her bf, was thinking jamaica would have lots of stuff to do but after hearing aramabol saying its dangerous at night im not sure about it. Maldives sounds boring after the 1st few days unless you just want to chill out for a week

PMSL, wish I was nearly 40 mate, I turned 44 in December I always wanted to go to the Maldives but that was when I liked holidays where you lay around all day to recover from the night before. Now I prefer being more active, walking in Canada (Newfoundland) has been one of my favorite holidays

Tobago is lovely. I'd recommend this hotel http://www.kariwak.com/index.html stayed there about 5 years ago for an ITV show that some of the older members may remember me being on.

Jamaica was beautiful, I went when young, but as said above, problem with crime. We had armed guards around the hotel! How about somewhere like Italy, home of romance

Jamaica has a shocking murder rate. I think it's the worst in the world..... BUT.... unless you are stupid (like me), a typical tourist is safe and most stick to the hotel grounds or go on organised tours. The crime is between gangs usually. I wouldn't let it put you off but I think there may be better islands to send your mum. Never been but Barbados etc? ... or nice Thai or Malaysian resort? You'd get more for your money in Asia.

Ive been to Barbados myself loved it, was same as jamaica meaning at night time you had to be careful but probs no way near as bad. Yeah Thailand may be nice, in fact i have a friend who is there right now and is touring... I can ask him wheres best. I could ask my mum to buy me some Primo while she's there lol

You can still be active in Tobago and it's relatively safe. The locals will actually stop and offer you lifts!! We went to the capital one day 'Scarborough' and were the only white faces but everyone would stop to speak to us. Never saw a beggar, went scuba diving, snorkling, guided walk round the "rain forest" and a general island tour. They drive on the left and speak English so getting around is very easy whether you hire a car or hitch a lift . Kariwak is just across the road from a fabulous beach and some shops, people would come to the restaurant from the Hilton and another high class hotel close by as the food was much nicer. No TVs/mini bars in the rooms.
