How do you fit shoulders into your routine? - 01 November 2009 18:55 ( #1 )
Everybody seems to have conflicting ideas about this, so what in your experience has proven to be the most effective time to train shoulders?

I voted for option 2, but that's just because it's the only way I've trained shoulders really for any length of time, not because I believe it's the best. In truth I have no idea what is the best, which is the purpose of this thread!

(It'll prob be a while before we get a significant number of votes in this poll but I'm really interested in this so please vote!)

I have tried two methods:

When I am busy and can not get to the gym as often

I do a three day split: Chest & Triceps, Back & Biceps and Legs & Shoulders.

When I have time to go 6 days a week then I do them all on individual days.

Chest,Biceps,Legs,Triceps,Back and Shoulders...

Personally I prefer the individual days option... that way your muscles are repaired by the time you train it again and you can train each one till complete exhaustion rather than being aware that you have another muscle group to train after.

Chest & Abs
Back & Bi's
Shoulders & Tri's
Legs

Seems to work best for me

That seems a popular routine but is in fact not one I would recommend if you wanted to keep your shoulders healthy. Many suffer from shoulder injuries doing this type of routines and have you wondered why?

Mon-Chest
Tues-Off
Wed-Back
Thurs-Shoulders
Fri-Arms
Sat-Legs
Sun-Off

Train quite high volume and so this allows less time in gym. Am also too tired to train any other bodypart afterwards.

Either 3 day split..

chest/tri
back/bi
legs/shoulders

or 4 day split seperating legs/shoulders. Usually 3 day split due to not having the time tho. I used to train chest/shoulder/tri but found shoulders feeling too weak/fatigued after chest, so prefer them on legs day now.

With shoulders you'll get almost as many ways of doing it as replies! Why?

Lots of angles
Lots of cross over with other body parts
Lots of variety of volume and intensities work....

Here's and example of an intensification program I have used with a client before who had poor development but lots of rooms for recovery.

MON: Chest and Back, shoulders heavy
Push presses, military presses, snatch pulls all low volume & high weight
TUES: Legs: hip dominant, calves 1, core1
THURS: shoulders volume, arms
Higher rep combination of super and giant sets: front/side/rear raises and lighter presses etc
FRI: Legs: Qaud dom., calves 2, core 2
